Completely moved to hear the emotion in your voice, @profgalloway.com, regarding alleged abuse of Belgian Malinois and prisoners. The notion that anyone could abuse the bond of a Malinois to perpetuate heinous acts is disgusting. They will die for you. Mine is one of the best things to happen to me

They once told you to never read the comments, but one of the best parts of social media nowadays is reading the comments on official government posts

So glad I've spent the last couple of days in the woods immersed in science and teamwork with @virusesimmunity.bsky.social, @yalecii.bsky.social, and colleagues, unplugged from media for the most part

A farewell to the summer with a suggestion from @anderseriksson.bsky.social : it's not Mountain Dew; it's a chartreuse swizzle (Chartreuse, pineapple juice, lime juice and falernum), which is orders of magnitude more expensive (glass from Cognitive Surplus)

I made a post earlier about Fluorescence Friday, but some people say it's Fascist Friday because of the ouster of UVA president... to which I say I'm still going to do science for the public interest for as long as I can

People consider the pineal gland to be a Third Eye. Maybe they should have focused on the Subfornical Organ instead - also in the middle of the brain, but with a newly acknowledged pathway for T cell traffic between the gut and the brain that affects behavior #FluorescenceFriday

The "intervention" is perhaps a tactic in which "rock bottom" is accelerated toward an addict to shock them into changing their perspective. It's possible that Americans do not appreciate the benefits of particular institutions until they are removed

Simple messages are needed but tough. One I try is that university "overhead" pays construction, plumbers, electricians, utilities, accountants, thousands of jobs

New NIH throws us under the bus and shows the real agenda: ending universities. Note inclusion of Harvard and Yale, but non-university research institutes, University of Texas, and other red state institutions are omitted. Republicans will find out too late that they too benefit from overhead

I'm a fan of the art and that's a very optimistic perspective. The philosophy of kintsugi includes the notion that things which were broken can become even more beautiful rather than being discarded. That which doesn't kill can make you stronger. Let's hope so

One of the biggest headaches has been that the media tended to subvert some of the messages. But a lot of science messaging is boring to people, and people also don't understand that sometimes your hypotheses are wrong

The sensors transmitting information that we interpret as pain are throughout our body and reach into the outermost layers of the skin (visualized here in magenta in a transgenic mouse's toe under a two-photon microscope). Pain is a major symptom of long COVID and other chronic syndromes

Almost never use a box plot alone. It's not hard to overlay the actual data points. If there are a lot, throw in a violin plot. Or even try all three approaches

Current ChatGPT version refuses to draw pathogens, so the artist that I hired to generate this image for my wife still beats it. ChatGPT has no problem drawing a syringe, however. (I'm working on a completely different image that also has a virus in it)
