bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I’m one non-academic angry liberal who would read your 10,000 word piece on “Why the Liberals Were Right” 😉 Not all liberals, certainly not about everything, etc., etc., be as nuanced as you like. But about the biggest thing, the authoritarianism that grew within the Republican Party, yes. 000
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 06/10/2026We are left to await your analysis of why 50 years of irresponsible braying from the right hasn’t produced communists within the Democratic Party. 031

Rogoff’s theory of central bank independence now hasn’t survived its 1st encounter with an 🇺🇸 authoritarian. It almost makes one think it’s all really political economy 🤔 0238
Reposted by @bahstuff.bsky.socialMark Copelovitch @mcopelov.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Really, would it now? The best way to preserve central bank independence is to cave to the demands of the executive? Man, the last few years have been quite the reveal of preferences from famous senior Harvard economists. I guess we weren’t supposed to take all those papers seriously after all. 218140

bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 08/08/2026What is that guy on? Arguably the last “gimme” election was 1996. I know many would say 2008, but Obama ran a near-perfect campaign. 010

bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 21/07/2026Veracity aside, all I ask for is one full throated, broad defense of liberal values, and I haven’t seen one from Kirchik in 15 years. 050

bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 26/06/2026I’m a liberal so “read a newspaper and actually show up to vote” hits my erogenous zones, but I find it hard to connect this to actual historical examples. Did we get the civil rights revolution because of super informed voters in the 50s & 60s? Or was it because of a disciplined movement agitating? 000
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 21/06/2026Howard is the one that particularly rankles, Fox brings over Rebecca Lowe from NBC, but not her studio partner, the one American analyst working at the highest level. 010
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 19/06/2026Oh come on, that’s embarrassing whataboutism, not political analysis. The Democrats had held the House since 1955, but the 80s saw the debt-to-GDP ratio rise for the first time since World War 2, what changed? Admire Reagan if you want, but he’s clearly most responsible for our modern profligacy. 020
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 11/06/2026I scrolled to make sure someone had mentioned Heiden 😎 His accomplishments seem superhuman now. 030
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 20/04/2026Countercyclical Keynesian fiscal policy is now “conservative”? Surely the financial deregulation of the 90s fits your argument better. 010
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 18/04/2026This is definitely true for me, with the added twist that I was raised to be a liberal *Republican*. It was quite disconcerting to come of age to a Republican president who was fiscally irresponsible and also used racist dog whistles. 010
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 15/04/2026Literally the movie most responsible for the PG-13 rating! 010
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 12/04/2026Obviously true - no doubt this shows my age but I’ve never gotten over the 2000 Nader vote either. 0120
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 25/03/2026Moyn throwing stones at those who are struggling to uphold liberal ideals, while making no constructive case of his own? I’m shocked. 1141
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 18/03/2026Sorry I made the mistake of engaging, have a great night. 000
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 18/03/2026If it is a “complete” misunderstanding, I do apologize. My sense was that you shy away from the label fascist because you worry it encourages despair and fatalism, as well as from an overly narrow view (imo) of past fascist movements. I think the greater danger is failing to name our enemy loudly. 100
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 18/03/2026I’m glad we agree that Bovino is a fascist. My disappointment with Professor Nichols is that he refuses to see fascism as an *ideology* that needs to be fought robustly. When a government is run by fascists, pursuing fascist goals, it merits the label, even if it is not yet fully authoritarian. 200
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 18/03/2026I’m looking for accurate. How would you describe the political ideology of the likes of Gregory Bovino? 400
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 18/03/2026Thank you for your (mostly) kind tone. I understand his argument very well, and to the extent that he wants us to stay focused on practical steps, I totally agree. But the analysis is wrong; a government is fascist when those exercising power hold that ideology. All our difficulty follows from that. 010
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 18/03/2026Professor Nexon corrected you on your misuse of “fascist state” four months ago, but it’s your feed, you get to punch nobodies like me if you want. 101
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 18/03/2026Let’s tap the sign again & ask, what political ideology best describes the goals, beliefs, and actions of Gregory Bovino, and the many others like him? Is it conservatism? Or maybe there’s some other, more accurate term? 7110
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 01/03/2026Thank you for elevating this! It’s worth mentioning the exhibition will now go on tour to Denver, Portland (Oregon), and Salem, MA over the next 15 months. 120
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 24/02/2026Nah, couldn’t be - such an ideology would have taken years to gestate within a political party and the all-seeing Professor Nichols would surely have noticed long before now. 000
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 07/02/2026I wonder, what would be the best one-word description of the political ideology motivating said authoritarian government? 000
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 05/02/2026Maybe read @lioneltrolling.bsky.social on how Trumpism is a variant of fascism too. 000
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 15/01/2026Classy thread by all parties. I still long for the alternate universe where every elected Democrat ends every single statement, public and private, with “…and that is why Donald Trump must be impeached and removed from office.” 040
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 10/01/2026Speaking only for my vanilla liberal self, the frustration is the refusal by so many institutions, leaders, and thinkers to address the growing hold fascism *as an ideology* has on the American right and the Republican Party. 000
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 08/01/2026Thank you for again doing intellectual garbage collection in this feed. 010
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 16/11/2025This actually the money post, where a fellow academic points out that Professor Nichols’ personal taxonomy is not widely shared, and (imo) not helpful to the current moment. 010
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 09/11/2025I’ll always give Nichols credit for being a forthright Never Trumper, but I’ve come to accept that his political analysis is at best a mix of pedantry and massive blind spots (racism, etc., etc.) Plus as you say he flees from serious interlocutors. 170
bahstuff.bsky.social @bahstuff.bsky.social · 14/08/2025This is an excellent point, and is a reminder that the 1980s conservative movement really did believe they were on their way to New Deal-like control of all 3 branches. Made them less hostile to democracy for a time. Also helps explain the hysterical opposition to Clinton just a few years later. 040
