I spent all day trying to "put out fires" at work and now I'm too tired to go see one of my favorite bands. Today's my thirtieth day in a row of spending at least 3 (but usually 8-14) hours in the workplace. I am so ready to actually enjoy the "fruits of my labors."

I got this Nels Cline Singers CD when I was like 17 and I still find it thrilling to this day. Fringe jazz that's not just freakout shit but never gets dull or flat. I'm very open to recommendations for more adventurous experimental and jazz in this vein.

Haven’t had a day off in four weeks but I let myself leave work at noon today so I finally got my hair all cleaned up, got a massage at a very fancy place, had a simple but perfect dinner and glass of wine, and got a ridiculous but fun little dessert on my way home.
Picture of me with noticeably less hair than the last time I posted a current picture of myself. It’s a short little mullet thing designed to grow into a nice shag. I’m wearing a black denim jacket with a Paddington pin on it and a black t-shirt for the band Tomahawk.Picture of a table in the lobby of a fancy massage place. On the table in front of me is a small tray with a hot towel, a small (2 ounce?) cup of warm green tea and a slightly larger (3 ounce?) cup with water. There are Andes mints, but I did not take one.Picture of a beautifully presented portion of steak and a nice glass of red wine. I ordered my meat medium rare. The wine wasn’t customizable, it just came from the bottle like this, but was quite good regardless.Churro soft serve from a place called milk bar. It was fine. Probably not something I’ll have again but it was a cute little shop

It’s interesting how Gen Z has decided that “The End of Heartache” is THE metalcore anthem when it’s obviously “My Last Serenade.” Alive or Just Breathing is untouchable

There are a lot of great albums that are known by consensus to be great, but usually the best thing you'll ever hear is going to be recommended by just one ridiculously devoted person who knows their shit and has carved out a very specific niche for themselves and their taste.

I had incredible kimchi fried rice for dinner tonight. It won't fix my exhaustion, but it's still so healing to eat something spicy and comforting in the middle of a rough patch.

If Hybrid Theory included, maybe up to five. The Fragile and Blackwater Park were life changers. Kate Bush I found in my early twenties so I'm not sure if she gets to count. And honestly, that Lacuna Coil was one of the first slow/elegant type metal albums I ever heard, so that's up there too

I have gone more than three weeks without having a full day off from work. Even on my days off I've had to go in for between 1 and 3 hours. I know it's not forever but I'd love some tips on maintaining sanity & self-care to avoid burnout from anyone else with an endless workload.

I play a lot of video games with great soundtracks but am not nearly so well versed in bands that do this sort of thing. Master Boot Record definitely has some stuff in this vein. Keygen Church is a bit more ornate and dense but it might also scratch the itch!

Saw pygmy lush play the most chaotic show when I was 21 and got this CD. This gorgeous drone song hiding at the end of such a bizarre, intense album felt like a special gift. I still cherish the whole experience, but this part always feels like the reward at the end.

Thinking about doing karaoke with friends soon, so I looked up the list at the place. They don't have "Babies" by Pulp (normal length, well known hit, upbeat) but they DO have "This is Hardcore" (6.5 minutes long, no chorus, creepy and weird). Might be evil and sing it anyway.

Also to be clear this person seemed like someone very nice who is going through something strange and potentially traumatizing. I was amused by some of the things they said (and they were having fun with it too) but I hope they find friends and get out of the grip of LLMs.

Customer came in, sat at the bar and thoroughly described how loneliness led them into AI psychosis. Ordered a couple cocktails, complimented every person working, asked us all our signs, then told me they’re “probably a bad person.” Bizarre experience. Very memorable. 10/10.

Chat Pile is headlining in massive venues. Every Mike Patton band seems to be reuniting to great fanfare. There has never been a better time for Buckethead to stop doing his weird jam band shit and bring the Deli Creeps to a world that is finally ready for whatever it is they do.

I’ve never enjoyed any metal comedians or any of that because “I understand the reference” isn’t the same as “that’s funny.” Old Immortal music videos will always be funnier than someone doing standup about death metal.

One day I will be beautiful and have "good" opinions and maybe even a talent or two and everyone will adore me, but for now the best I can offer is being the court jester of the "former music journalist" world and sometimes share a link to a song or a picture of my dog.

This was designed in a lab to appeal to me. Oddball experimental music guy collaborates with incredible jazz drummer thirty years his senior and they make something blissful and free. I used to listen to this in the mornings with my coffee. Might be wise to get back to that.

A friend reminded me of this and goddamn it's good. I've somehow never actually listened to Fourtet (I know, I know, I'll change that soon) but found this when working in a record store like 15 years ago and not buying it is one of my biggest regrets.
