The Broken Spine (SUBS OPEN) @thebrokenspine.co.uk · 23/07/2026
A new Broken Spine workshop is in development. The Poetry of Cultural Debris will explore how mixtapes, cinema tickets, obsolete technology, childhood toys, half-remembered sitcoms & other pop-cultural remnants can become poems of memory, identity & private mythology. More soon.
Landscape promotional graphic reading, “The Poetry of Cultural Debris: A Writing Workshop with Alan Parry.” A distressed, screenprinted collage combines football, music, comedy, wrestling, horror, retro gaming and writing imagery, including a cassette, vinyl record, piano keys, microphone, wrestling ring, championship belt, arcade joystick, television, typewriter and manuscript. The Broken Spine logo appears in the upper-right corner.

For #PoemsAbout #PowerCut @thebrokenspine.co.uk
Candlelit Seventies Without

a thought switch flicked,
and if glass globe works light
and I recall candlelit Seventies
evening in Winter's discontent.

How important during that Winter
electric light, few hours TV,
the extra jumpers and ignorant
thrill of days extraordinary nights

Those nights I recalled stood
underground in Eighties, caplight off
a darkness lively with ghosts
as imagination lit by stories.

I've not been on here for a while, but here's one I wrote (after 18 days of no power after Storm Kristin back in January) for #poemsabout #powercut #poems #blueskypoets Thanks, as ever to Alan Parry for his continuing inspiration.
A screenshot of the Apple Notes version of my poem, Shadows, which goes like this:
Shadows

LED lantern hanging swinging
Light white bright brighter than white
Casting hard sharp stark darkness
Shadows with a tangible presence
That almost land with a bang

Flattening the solid and soft
Surfaces alike, until chaotically
Indistinguishable, extinguished
Blasting the contrast of ashen ink
Against ochre paperback pages
To virtual unreadability.

And oh the countless times
Unresponsive switches for light
Are flicked uselessly on and off
Off and on and off, accompanied by
Sweary condemnation and
Eventual rueful laughter

And so to bed, unlit, much earlier
Than in more enlightened times
Rain rattles Gene Krupa paradiddles
Wind whips up panic
Plucks at timbers and tiles
Shadows gather and merge
Become one with the black world
Overwhelm sleep.

From the oven of Tempelhof, Berlin… #heatwave #poetry #poem #poetsofbluesky
The sun, boiling white-hot over a molten lava sea. Heatwave

When brass monkeys look smug
When you sweat like a murderer in confession
And all you’ve done is stand up
When there aren’t enough ice lollies in the world
When saunas are cold comfort
When the breeze uphill is like
Someone’s trained a hairdryer on you
When even butterflies pant
When beige is the new green
When reservoirs recede
To reveal old spires
When you’re wide-eyed, sleepless
Waiting for the bedroom to go ‘Ping!’
When you turn the pillow to the cool side
And there is no cool side
When the heat waves
And you daren’t wave back

A poem on the theme of names not numbers, which blends ideas from a couple of counting songs. If you know them, perhaps you can sing them? I found it satisfying to do just that/ And therein lies my satisfaction with the poem - it nudged me towards the songs.

For @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk #PoemsAbout #Static
Silence (From "A World Where" 2)

is forbidden. All must talk
in their sleep. Learn

to talk over one another
and listen at the same time.

Any silence means imprisonment.
Babies are encouraged from birth to scream.

Writing is seen as a form of silence
so everything is read aloud,

traffic signs, shopfronts, TV and radio
are talked over the top of all the time.

Songs are sung constantly. There
is no two minute silence as a sign

of respect for the dead. It is disrespectful
not to talk at the graveside,

And in church, during a sermon
or any speeches. Hecklers are encouraged.

Everyone has a voice that must be heard.
Everyone must listen and respond immediately.

#PoemsAbout #Static
Holidays

When I was small, we took our holidays in a static caravan at the coast
I would fall asleep listening to imagined voices in the radio silence
As outside, creatures of the night prowled in a field of static
The darkness illuminated by the white noise of the North Sea

At dawn, a metal gas canister wheezed as my dad turned on the stove
to boil a kettle which hissed and whistled to a gradual climax
Tea made with boiled egg water is good for bones and teeth
And blackened toast, thinly spread with margarine, fortifies the blood

Good morning! It's great to be back to #PoemsAbout #Static. Thank you to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk .
Poem:
Laundered

In the arid, winter-dark
a thousand sparks fly,
looking for a conductor,

any could cause
a conflagration--

infinite possibilities

(to breathe free)

 imagine
if we could

(stop shooting)

wash and rinse
in sun-streams and moon-rivers,

apply a fabric sheet layered with
feathers from a galactic phoenix

to tumble us dry,
to soothe the static,

to leave us scented
with hope as we rise.
