How does someone get new glasses without pestering a jury of their loved ones about the various options? Or was he just not on the jury?

I grew up in the SF suburbs and we couldn’t borrow Dad’s car until we could pull up to the top of a hill like this, stop at the sign (seeing nothing but sky through the windshield), and then proceed. Stick shift. Inevitably some jerk in a beemer would be six inches off your back bumper.

"Barbara Cartland was famous for dictating her novels. With a pekingese clamped to her hot pink bosom she would lie back on a library couch and exhale a story about virginal girls taming wayward dukes, damaged airmen or misunderstood surgeons." Now THAT is a damned LEDE. h/t @oddthisday.bsky.social

How cool! I've paddled the Bronx River in NYC. A river otter was spotted in the Bronx River for the first time in over 100 years! Because otters need clean water and abundant fish to thrive, this sighting hints at the waterway’s ecological recovery from being treated as a dumping ground.

If you ask someone today to name the builder of Hadrian's Wall, they would give you a funny look. But historical memory is odd, and right up to the 1800s we forgot who built it. Until in 1840 John Hodgson, an obscure Northumbrian clergyman, published the LONGEST footnote in history... 1/22

It’s instructions to the messenger. Most people could not read, so tablets like this often start with “Tell [recipient] the following:” Whether this particular messenger did so using a whiny voice is, alas, lost to time.

Just found out about the death on Aug. 8 of John Crowley, probably the writer closest to my heart, and I am gutted. LITTLE, BIG is one of those books I revisit every couple of years. One of those voices so singular that your internal monologue sounds like him for a while after.
