The Rain is spectacular - 80s R&B is very much Not The Story here but also represents the biggest reclaimable treasure trove in this poll, especially the stuff that never made it into the perennial Magic FM canon

I always reach for early 00s microhouse whenever a thick fog like this descends, and hearing Vocalcity again, on proper headphones, is a revelation

(Also, hands down one of the ten or so greatest and most unmistakable basslines in pop music)

Great as everything else here is, including Your Love is almost unfair. Completely unlike anything else from 1986, including the house stuff, simultaneously futuristic and timeless, the Sphinx beamed in from outer space

You should let them know they can probably stream it to the TV

A friend of mine had an uncharacteristically bling wedding a few years ago and the hotel staff were practically pouring Midori down people's necks. Was it foisted wholesale on the hospitality industry at some point?

Also no shade on this particular artwork but everything looks fantastic on that roof

I think a lot of his stuff is aesthetically really cool and the spiel about the meaning of it all feels suspiciously grafted on afterwards. He's genuinely excellent at branding.

This is like when you find out that a third of Robinson Crusoe is what happens once he gets off the island

I have no memory of him at all but by the looks of it he'd have cleaned up if he'd waited a decade or so. He walked so Macklemore and Post Malone could run

(ie the biggest and most persistent fans tend to think of her as a guitar singer songwriter first and everything else second)

I'd dispute Taylor counts here in the first place (until she makes another country album which tbh is probably next up).

This probably comes down to 'no one can afford to go out any more', but I assume the gym/running playlist vote still buoys a certain kind of basic banger

Yeah there was a real sense in 23-24 that things were happening and that just drains away from 25 onwards

The early seasons were on ITV first and I believe produced here. They ran fewer ads than the US networks, so there was usually a British sketch thrown in there to make up the running time that never made it across the Atlantic

Sometimes I like to imagine the reaction the first time it was played in a newly reopened club. The roof would have been blown off.

TBF it might also have been down to the entire youth of this country being locked down for months on end. (ie it's impossible to imagine a song that hard getting to #1 *now*)

I generally view the 10s (especially the early 10s) as the worst pop decade so I'm not going to disagree here but it makes sense to me why rage may have given way to anxiety over that time

David Audit @awesomewells.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
I guess you can argue social media relieved them of that responsibility, we already know where most of them stand, and when the music is political it's obliquely or subversively so

David Audit @awesomewells.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
... plus 'authenticity' is a much more prized commodity in actual pop, which is why Sheeran is in such a hole. But the streaming thing is why he's basically insulated from it
010
David Audit @awesomewells.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
I think once you filter out that stuff then pop has always felt fairly apolitical? But streaming has narrowed the boundaries of pop in many places (widening them in others) and social media has dramatically changed the mode of expression, political opinions are inescapable...

David Audit @awesomewells.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
... much of which felt like an attempted rebuke or an attempt to rise above the nastiness of the political era or its British equivalents
010
David Audit @awesomewells.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
(Very British perspective here but when I think of that era I think of grime and the response to Grenfell and Corbyn, 'Black' by Dave, but also Solange, Kendrick, YG being played everywhere, plus the aftermath of the Manchester bombing...

How are you defining pop here? Because that doesn't chime with my sense of 2016-20 at all

Mahler belongs in this list fwiw

Surely not (for context they are slightly above Springsteen, Bowie and Stevie Wonder and only slightly below TLC)

Clairo is the other one, who I would absolutely have put in the P*l*ch*k Z*ne. (Also, heartening as it is, where is that massive groundswell of De La Soul fandom coming from?)

That one blew my mind as well, see also Beabadoobee, who I had down as a decidedly mid-level concern. But I don't understand global pop markers at all

David Audit @awesomewells.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Yeah the question in mind is "would this have played out differently on a Coldplay tour?" (Answer - probably) but I'm not sure he'll suffer much lasting damage, his audience is big enough that there's a huge chunk who don't care, and he was never overburdened with cred to begin with
020
David Audit @awesomewells.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
His image has never even been that, it was based around being the ordinary middle class *kid* with the guitar that exists in most towns, and they can be apolitical, but that conceit becomes harder to sustain the older and richer he gets. But it's one reason why he's never really changed his image

I'm sure there's a hipster John Martyn contingent but the really disconcerting thing is how they all look the same

There was definitely a recent modern etiquette article (perhaps a London-centric one) that made the point that it's bad form to pet a dog without acknowledging its owner. Unless the dog's wandering around all over the place or actively saying hello I'd usually ask first?

Thing is I don't think you want to be perceived as the music guy in the office, it's a real poisoned chalice, so it's good when other people can take the attention there

There were all of ten people in the cinema when we went to see it a couple of Fridays ago so I doubt it. It's a good film but probably not well served by being the second Olivia Wilde awkward sex comedy in as many months

I found out last year that one of my colleagues had made a collaborative EP with a highly revered house producer. It definitely made a difference to the office dynamic

Out of curiosity I looked at the UK top 40 and - once you filter out Radio 2 staples like Raye and Olivia Dean - black artists have almost entirely disappeared from the charts and no one seems to have noticed or care

I've listened to YHF maybe one and a half times (wasn't a big deal here, was more focused on being sniffy about the Strokes IIRC), but I'm sort of intrigued by its ability to continue annoying people 25 years on. I guess it's sort of proto-GAPDY?
