Hey @samdodgemlive.bsky.social don't know if you still check this website, but here's a bunch of people talking about Ann Arbor changing. You might frame your article to say people think Ann Arbor is changing, but they have literally always thought that!

“Ann Arbor has changed wonderfully since you and I roamed its streets as students. The old landmarks are nearly all gone, and one can only recall localities by the aid of a vivid imagination. The small frame buildings with which we were familiar have given place to spacious and tasteful houses; and the vegetable gardens which surrounded them have been replaced by handsome lawns and shady retreats.”

1894 (I'm so excited because I got to use the Ann Arbor Argus archive)
“‘Yes,’ added the doctor, looking around, ‘Ann Arbor has changed in 25 years.’”

“Ann Arbor has changed greatly in the past few years, and the idea has evolved from these changes to show the alumni over the city and point out to them things as they now are, in contrast to what they have been. It is an interest that is common to the university and to the town, and the people are asked to co-operate in the entertainment of the alumni.”

“Ann Arbor has changed wonderfully since the first paper was published here, and each change has been reflected in the character of the papers of the city. As the hamlet grew into a village, then took on the aspects of a country town and finally became a city, the newspapers grew with it, keeping step with the progress of the municipality. As the city has grown bigger and better, so has the Times News grown better and bigger, until today we believe we can say without egotism that our patrons are receiving the best paper ever published in the city.”

“‘Ankles now are knee high,’ the octogenarian observed. ‘The past and the present don’t near meet. How Ann Arbor has changed. The moving views offered on the campus, streets and in class rooms with the rainbow dresses, short skirts and bobbed hair certainly conspire to make a young man or even an old one, to quote Oliver Wendell Holmes, ‘love to look on a scene like this’.’”

And we guess you have too.”

“Mrs. Homer Ferguson breathlessly arrived on the threshold after an hour’s drive from Ann Arbor. Gowned in black lace over taffeta with velvet stole, she cheerfully reported that she had been lost twice on the way. ‘Ann Arbor has changed so much,’ she explained.”

"ANN ARBOR TOWN Has Changed A Lot...”
“In some ways, Muehlig’s Store has changed too. But basically it’s still that old-fashioned dry goods store on the same corner of Main and Washington Street, well known for good quality, friendly service and reliability.
We, at Muehlig’s are proud of this trademark and we intend to preserve it!”

“Others are moving still further on to Pinckney and Portage Lake. Gerald Reason, a Pinckney realtor, also reports he’s getting a significant number of calls from Ann Arbor people. The reasons: ‘Taxes are mentioned, racial problems, student unrest, riots. They don’t like the hippies running the town. They just want to get out of that environment.’
Adds Reason: ‘Ann Arbor has changed considerably in the past 10 years. I can remember that when you said you were from Ann Arbor, you were looked up to. It’s not that way anymore.’
Reason believes the Pinckney school system is ‘pretty good’ but adds that ‘we’re also having drug problems.’
But Reason doesn’t feel that people are moving out of Ann Arbor just to save money. ‘Prices hereabouts,’ he says, ‘are getting up so close to the prices in Ann Arbor that it’s not worth coming out here to save money. There are other reasons.’
He points out that the money a man saves in taxes by moving is offset by the increased gas and commuter costs.”

“In fact, U-M is the reason Mrs. Campbell is in Michigan. She returned for the 50th anniversary of her graduation class and says there were about 15 people there she remembered.
‘Ann Arbor has changed so much since the day our class sat listening to Charles Evans Hughes give the commencement address,’ she says.”

“EVEN ON weeks when the bands have shown up, there has sometimes been a problem in attracting an audience to the fledgling night spot. ‘The audience for adventurous music is getting smaller. Ann Arbor has changed over the past half-dozen years. There’s only a minority of people interested in hearing something different and pursuing alternatives. We’ve been losing money on our more experimental nights.’”

“Jim Ecker, Cedar Rapids Gazette: ‘Ann Arbor has changed since I went there to school, in the good old days of the early ’70s, when college kids packed city council and made marijuana a misdemeanor. Does the Gandy Dancer still have great lobster? Do the Detroit kids still go home on Friday nights? Who won the Mud Bowl last year?
‘Ann Arbor — a good place to study, but the fun times were up in East Lansing. We used to look forward to getting out of town and going up to MSU, where all the good-looking girls were.’”

“‘In Albion, in the same day, you can run into so many types of people,’ Mary Hunt said. The couple lived most of their adult lives in Ann Arbor, a city known for its diversity.
‘Ann Arbor has changed a lot in the last 20 years,’ Hunt said. ‘It’s become a big city.’
So they left it for a country home in Waterloo Township. But that soon became too isolated for them, and they began searching for a middle ground. Albion fit their needs and interests.”

“‘Fred (Ulrich) let me have summers off, but I was always available to work fulltime at book rush, Christmas and later the Art Fair.’
Westerman worked as a cashier, checking out people back when the supply counter was in the front of the store. Now she stays pretty much on the floor, assisting where needed.
She doesn’t think the college book business has changed all that much, although prices have. The notebook she once sold to students at ‘19 cents, or maybe a quarter,’ goes for a dollar today.
Ann Arbor has changed a lot, too.
‘There’s more traffic,’ she says, ‘and this corner has completely changed,’ citing the closure of East University and the addition of streetside benches for people to sit on.
The original Street Art Fair had its genesis near Ulrich’s, and Westerman remembers how ‘we got to know the artists back in the old days. Now there’s too much people traffic.’
For relaxation, Westerman enjoys going to U-M basketball and football games. Hoops is her favorite, though, because it’s ‘faster and has more movement.’”
The article continues with Westerman discussing former employees returning to visit and her enjoyment of working at Ulrich’s.
A sidebar titled “HELEN WESTERMAN” lists her age as 84, residence as Ann Arbor, occupation as store clerk at Ulrich’s Book Store, personal status as single with two sons, and community involvement as First United Methodist Church in Ann Arbor.

“Ann Arbor has changed for the worse, Menefee says. As a kid he used to ride his bike downtown and would know the names of most of the shop owners. He grew up near Mack Elementary and is sad to drive by there now and see so few children playing.
‘All the neighborhoods were great when I was a kid,’ he said. ‘You could go anywhere and get into a baseball game. Go to a park, run into something and get a football game up. You go through these neighborhoods now and you don’t see any children anywhere.’”

“Broat has been coming to the Fleetwood since she was a kid growing up in Pinckney. She says she hatched the idea of paying tribute to the gritty little Fleetwood out of concern that the Fleet could disappear someday. ‘The face of Ann Arbor has really changed during the last 10 years,’ she says.”

“Kunselman, who grew up in Ann Arbor in the 1960s and ’70s, said he’s ‘the son of hippies’ and the attitude of social change that permeated the culture during his childhood remains with him.
‘There are very few townies left in this community,’ he said. ‘I believe in the future of Ann Arbor because I am a product of its past. I believe that Ann Arbor has changed, has grown, but still has the foundation of a community that was respected worldwide for great social change.’

“Samida said she is hoping to move somewhere within 45 minutes of Ann Arbor, but she doesn’t want to stay in the city.
‘I’m looking to get out of town. The taxes are insane and water is going up,’ she said. ‘Ann Arbor has just changed.’”

2026 (Today)
“As the Ann Arbor News continues to report on the swarm of high rises coming to downtown Ann Arbor, we're looking for new perspectives. Were you a student in the 2000s who returned for a football game and didn't recognize the city? A former townie who came back to visit and were shocked by the changes?
We'd love to hear from you! Please email Sam Dodge at sdodge@mlive.com.”
Below the post is a graphic with the headline:
“Are you a former resident shocked by how much Ann Arbor has changed? We want to hear from you!”
The graphic includes an aerial photograph of downtown Ann Arbor showing several multistory buildings under construction, with blue exterior sheathing and two large red construction cranes rising above the city skyline.

We repealed that proposal last year, and voted to give the parking lot to the Ann Arbor Library. But to me, and a lot of other people in Ann Arbor, Prop E feels like another unfunded mandate, just like the library lot (and has some of the same players pushing for it).

A big selling point for that proposal was that it wouldn't cost the voters anything. There was no millage attached, and that is a big part of why it passed. In the 7 years that followed, nothing happened, except the original advocates for the park started saying the city now needed to fund this park

Mark Madonna @awesomark.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
I think some important context is that in 2018, there was a ballot proposal to declare a parking lot as a park (this was an effort to block housing). It had no millage attached to fund transforming the parking lot. That proposal ended up passing

I should also point out A2P2 started in 2021, I think. They may have done this back then, but interest rates are much higher today (and rising). I wonder if they have reevaluated their models to see if they still hold true with those increases in the interest rates

I mean, if someone has a spreadsheet that breaks down all the costs (Bond repayment, revenue from rate payers, cost of providing electricity, cost of maintenance, cost of upgrading the grid to only use renewable energy, etc.) and it shows it can be done, I'd love to see it

Why Are There Still “Township Islands” Within the City of Ann Arbor? - Ann Arbor Observer
For almost a half-century there have been discussions about annexing the remaining “township islands.”
120
Mark Madonna @awesomark.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
But yeah, I also have questions about what happens to the 500 township islands in Ann Arbor? Would they have separate lines and stay on DTE, could they use the Ann Arbor MEU, or would they need to be annexed?

Mark Madonna @awesomark.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
When I asked Yousef Rabhi about it, his answer wasn't that a county can't have a municipal grid, just that it would require the county to be a charter county. I'd guess because a county is one governmental body, it would be allowed
220
Mark Madonna @awesomark.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
I'm not sure how inspiring it is to have @a2publicpower.bsky.social saying the city shouldn't raise taxes, and that public power should only be done if and only if the rates collected from payers cover 100% of the cost to run the grid AND the bond to purchase it
000
Mark Madonna @awesomark.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Prop E specifically doesn't bring other municipalities in with it, and when I asked one of the A2P2 board members (who is a county commissioner), why isn't there a push for a county utility, he said because it was too hard
