@hipstersmoothie.com love the collections feature! unfortunately the pagination seems to be borked on firefox on desktop for me: I like the flipping, but fwiw I sorta expected the contents to take me to a post and then to be able to just scroll in there.

This from @bookshop.org is the first example I've seen of a b corp with real limitations in the charter
Certified as a B Corp, Bookshop.org puts this mission and the public good above financial interests, giving over 80% of our profit margin to independent bookstores. In 2022, B-Labs announced we were "best for the world": in the top 5% of all B-Corps.

bezos's aws mandate sounds kinda atmospheric if you squint at it right doesn't it? from steve yegge's google rant gist.github.com/chitchcock/1... (ironically posted on google plus and so the original is lost to time)
His Big Mandate went something along these lines:

All teams will henceforth expose their data and functionality through service interfaces.

Teams must communicate with each other through these interfaces.

There will be no other form of interprocess communication allowed: no direct linking, no direct reads of another team's data store, no shared-memory model, no back-doors whatsoever. The only communication allowed is via service interface calls over the network.

It doesn't matter what technology they use. HTTP, Corba, Pubsub, custom protocols -- doesn't matter. Bezos doesn't care.

All service interfaces, without exception, must be designed from the ground up to be externalizable. That is to say, the team must plan and design to be able to expose the interface to developers in the outside world. No exceptions.

I should probably get real ones tho, currently using this scrap piece of wood, that I chamfered and stuck rubber feet on, and this iron? cube
A top down view of a desk, there's a trackpad between two halves of a split keyboard. The left one has an iron block in front of it, the right a wooden block. There are random other items on the desk, and a coiled cable between the two halves of the keyboard.

Interesting choice in the schema for nooki.me ! collectively owned things are hard to model in atproto, even without any notions of shared privacy. I think a pattern that might be useful over time is rich multi-user access controls to a given pds.

ahhhhhh!!! List handling as well!!!
The answer is record-replay: On the client side, we execute the callback once, passing in a special placeholder value. The parameter behaves like an RPC promise. However, the callback is required to be synchronous, so it cannot actually await this promise. The only thing it can do is use promise pipelining to make pipelined calls. These calls are intercepted by the implementation and recorded as instructions, which can then be sent to the server, where they can be replayed as needed.

I am obsessed with this building in Montreal
A photo of a very rusted metal panelled wall with 5 pipies against it that bend and come down to a tin roof.At the bottom of the picture a hill with three cars parked on it, and a metal bridge in the foreground. Above that a bunch of trees and above that a huge concrete wall witha single metal staircase on it, and a row of windows at the top An old abandoned building with broken windows and lots of metal piping on itAn old rusty building with three pipes against it and seperated two other pipes one which is broken, missing a middle section. There's a dark tree in the foreground.

oh no!
Horned oak galls are formed under the direction of the gall-wasp, Callirhytis cornigera (Family Cynipidae). The vast majority of the insect and mite galls found on oaks cause little to no harm to the overall health of their host trees. However, these galls are an exception. Vascular tissue becomes disorganized within the gall structure which disrupts vascular flow. The portion of the stem beyond the gall is often starved of water and dies. This doesn't kill trees, but canopy dieback may be so severe you wish the tree would die.

Twitter obviously fumbled it, but I think atproto can become the superconducting infra for publishing things on the internet (from: www.ribbonfarm.com/2021/03/11/e... )
By contrast, in 2007, it took weeks or months, money upfront, and a fair amount of learning to set up a decently functional, non-ugly WordPress site. And years to fine tune it. Now, 14 years later, it is somewhat easier (you no longer have to muck around doing unix-shell labor or keeping plugins painfully updated), but not by much. You still have to think hard about design, information architecture, typography (ugh!), distribution etc. Here’s a difficulty scale:

    100: cgi-bin Perl e-zine circa 1999
85: earliest blogs, with manual RSS wrangling, circa 2002
    70: WordPress, Google Reader/Feedburner era, circa 2007
60: Hosted mature WordPress, with theme frameworks, circal 2014
50: WordPress, including monetization plumbing circa 2020
40: Patreon-based multimedia creator stack setup, circa 2018
35: Static websites today, with minimal template editing
    15: Substack
8: My guess of where the superconducting baseline will be once Twitter integrates Revue, Spaces etc. properly, circa 2022

This (unfortunately paywalled) stratechery article from 2022 makes an excellent pitch for ATProto stratechery.com/2022/passpor...
The problem with this last point is that most platforms are defined by their medium: YouTube for video, Spotify for audio, Substack for text, etc. Sure, they are branching out — YouTube music, video podcasts on Spotify, and Substack supports both podcasts and video — but as a creator I would rather have my content where my subscribers prefer to consume it (i.e. if I were to launch video I would like it to be on YouTube). In other words, while platforms start with their medium and sometimes branch out, I as a creator want to start with a direct connection to my subscribers and enable them to access my content wherever it makes the most sense (this is the genesis of the Passport name: you ought to be able to carry a credential with you to other places that gives you special privileges).

In short, if there is ever going to be a way for the big platforms to effectively work together to the benefit of individual creators, it will have to brokered by some sort of neutral entity that isn’t competitive with or beholden to those platforms; neutrality and independence is exactly what blockchains are uniquely suited to provide.

This from @outlier.nyc is the first of their shirts in a while to tempt me. love the flat look of the thing, esp w/ the lightness of linen, and the raw edges add a nice texture w/o being super noisy or messy outlier.nyc/collections/...
Product description from link: A raw cut Injected Linen boxford experiment [#512]. Injected Linen is warp knit, which means it raw cuts far better than classic woven shirt fabrics. By leaving all edges raw cut rather than folding them back we can create a flatter laying shirt, which in turn creates a dynamic tension with exposed raw edges of the fabric. A button-up study in contrasts if you will.

Insane that a consumer device company has LESS THAN two weeks of notice for everything shutting down. Shows just complete disdain for their user imo. Literally just a full brick it sounds like?? support.humane.com/hc/en-us/art...
A screenshot of a support notice with this text:

Important Update for Consumer Ai Pin Customers

Dear Ai Pin Customers,

First and foremost, thank you for being an early adopter of Ai Pin. Your support, feedback, and enthusiasm have been instrumental in shaping this technology, and we are truly grateful to have had you on this journey with us.

We are writing to inform you that, effective immediately, we are winding down the consumer Ai Pin as our business priorities have shifted.

What This Means for You:

End of Consumer Availability: Effective immediately, new purchases of the consumer Ai Pin will be discontinued.
Device Timeline: Your Ai Pin will continue to function normally until 12pm PST on February 28, 2025. After this date, it will no longer connect to Humane’s servers, and .Center access will be fully retired.
Device Features: Your Ai Pin features will no longer include calling, messaging, Ai queries/responses, or cloud access.
Data Access: We strongly encourage you to sync your Ai Pin over Wi-Fi and download any stored pictures, videos, and notes from .Center before February 28, 2025. If you do not do this, your data will be lost upon deletion on February 28, 2025 at 12pm PST.
Data Deletion: On February 28, 2025 at 12pm PST all remaining consumer data will be permanently deleted.

We understand this transition may be difficult, and you may have questions. For more details on managing your data and next steps, please refer to our FAQ. Our support team is here to help at support@humane.com through February 28th, 2025.

Once again, thank you for being an early supporter of Ai Pin. Your engagement has meant the world to us, and we deeply appreciate the role you’ve played in our innovation journey.

Warmly,

The Humane Team

So google wave def died because of how silly wave/wavelet sounds right
A screenshot of text from the Wikipedia article for the Google Wave Federation Protocol:

A wave provider operates a wave service on one or more networked servers. The central pieces of the wave service is the wave store, which stores wavelet operations, and the wave server, which resolves wavelet operations by operational transformation and writes and reads wavelet operations to and from the wave store. Typically, the wave service serves waves to users of the wave provider which connect to the wave service frontend. For the purpose of federation, the wave service shares waves with participants from other providers by communicating with these wave provider's servers. Copies of wavelets are distributed to all wave providers that have participants in a given wavelet. Copies of a wavelet at a particular provider can either be local or remote. We use the term to refer to these two types of wavelet copies (in both cases, we are referring to the wavelet copy, and not the wavelet). A wave view can contain both local and remote wavelet copies simultaneously.[4][5]
