Oyster fishing is a way of life on PEI, but disease is threatening to wipe out the sector that has sustained communities here for generations. In an unstable world, we need to protect Canada's industries. I spoke with fishers in Charlottetown to learn what the federal government can do to help.

I’ve lived on the Sunshine Coast on and off for the past 20 years, embedded in a caring, close-knit community. This news is a huge relief for the 400 workers at Howe Sound Pulp and the local economy. Congrats to @unifor.org Local 1119 and all involved in saving these good union jobs at the mill!

There's a reason previous Liberal governments looked at privatizing airports and didn't go through with it. Private investors don't want a stake in our public assets to make them better. They’re in it to make as much money as possible for themselves - while workers and passengers pay the price.

In a few days, Prime Minister Carney is inviting some of the world’s richest CEOs to Toronto to buy up Canada’s resources, public infrastructure, and more. We won’t save Canada by selling it off to the highest bidder. Join us, and let's build a Canada for the many, not the money.

Not so fast: airports may very well be on the auction block at the investment summit. We've seen a copy of the pitch book for Carney's investor summit, and here's an interesting paragraph:

I want to share some reflections on last night’s by-elections. While there is still lots of work to do, our strong result in Beaches—East York and the surge of grassroots organizing in all three ridings shows us one thing: the NDP is back.

Avi Lewis.

To all of our by-election candidates, their teams, and every single volunteer, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Black text on a beige background:

Congratulations to our incredible by-election candidates who poured every ounce of their energy into these campaigns. Shannon Devine, Raphaël Émond and Stephen Tweedale gave these races their all, bringing hundreds of new people into our movement and earning the support of thousands.

They offered real solutions – to bring down the cost of living, tackle the climate crisis and protect Canadian jobs in the midst of a trade war. And they did it with positivity, grace and a whole lot of hard work.

In Beaches—East York, our party has returned to fighting form. We’ve proved that the sting of last election was a one-time injury. Tonight we more than tripled our vote share from last election, and did better than we have in any election since 2015.

To all of our candidates, their teams, and every single volunteer, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Avi Lewis.

When you’re in a war, you use your strongest weapons. And our power in this trade war comes from resources we have that the US needs — like oil, gas, potash, and other critical minerals.

Trump’s trade war is destructive and dangerous, & it will harm Canadians and Americans alike. It's also a fork in the road moment for our country. We need a made-in-Canada plan to protect our workers & industries, develop our economic independence & double down on strengthening our public services.

While we await the details of the US trade negotiations, I'm urging the Prime Minister not to grant any concessions that would further undermine our economic independence.
Black text on a beige background: For the benefit of all the workers affected - in every industry from steel and aluminum to autos, forestry and more - a good deal with the US would be great news. But while we await the details, I’m urging the Prime Minister not to grant any concessions that would further undermine our economic independence.

We are dealing with a President who trades in chaos and unpredictability: there is no deal that will bring an end to the threats and uncertainty. For this reason, protecting Canadian workers without granting further unilateral concessions is essential.

And the Keystone XL pipeline is a concession that makes no sense whatsoever - for our economy, our sovereignty, or the climate. Earlier this year, the Energy Minister said repeatedly that he wants to help the US achieve “energy dominance”. This should obviously not be any part of a trade deal between our two countries.

Canadians are not in the mood for more giveaways to the Trump administration. Even if that means walking away from the table to protect Canadian workers and industries.

No deal is better than a bad deal.

Uncontrolled AI is a threat to our jobs, our environment, and our communities. Canadians across the political divide know this, and that’s why they’re fighting back. The public must assert its role in the technologies shaping our lives, and draw hard lines where AI causes nothing but harm.

In this photograph, PM Mark Carney is touring the Government Operations Centre - the nerve centre that leads the “integrated federal response to all-hazard events of a national interest.” The workforce there has been cut in half thanks to Carney’s public service cuts, from 100 to just 50 workers. 🧵

Wildfires are getting more and more devastating because of global warming, which is primarily caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Trump won’t say that because he’s in the industry’s pocket. If he wants compensation for the wildfire smoke, he should go after the oil and gas giants responsible.
1127685
Avi Lewis @avilewis.ca · 21/07/2026
When the US struggles to put out wildfires, Canada has always been there to lend a hand. But when Canada struggles with the same, all Trump has for us are threats and insults. Canadians are tired of it.

The Liberals have used their newly acquired majority to push through major changes to Canada’s laws at the last minute and shut down debate on legislation with major implications for the lives of Canadians. This is not normal. This is what happens when a government thinks it can act with impunity.
