Those policies are great for working parents but probably not though to move the needle to replacement rate. There needs to be a cultural shift that repositions childrearing to be at the same level as other socially beneficial careers.

Paying one partner for child rearing, whether it is a father or mother, is the point. I don't really have a preference of the gender of the parent that does it.

Those are good starts, but I think insufficient. We need the state paying women as a career to be a mother & caregiver along with a cultural campaign to influence people into seeing it as a real and socially valuable career

My experience interacting with this world through students is mostly just being stunned that nobody will do anything to stop these familial spirals. Worse, it seems local and state govt are acting like they think this will go away if they ignore it

The mystery as I've learned from school social workers is that we've got such a high judicial tolerance for parental neglect coupled with absolutely no program capacity for helping the number of children who would be better off removed from their family

You don't even have to like capitalists themselves to admit this is true! Capitalism has failures and particular capitalist figures are horrid humans, but the dominance of local lords brings both lower production and subjugation

Connected to this, I think we need to reevaluate how we frame the emergence of capitalism was relative to what came before. Crushing the landed gentry and local lords has been one of the crowning achievements of human civilization

Not to go too far on an aside here, but a lot of education is a semi-solved problem but we just don't like the answers. Many problems perpetuated because they increase graduation rates.

I think in person timed writes are better for a bunch of non-AI reasons, so we really should be fine. The problem is it too accurately shows what students (don't) know. There is no fluff factor, which is why many school administrations require teachers to have certain grade categories and weights.

People look at me like I'm crazy when I say the texture is better. Nice to know I'm not the only one who prefers it over meat texture

I continue to believe that in times like these, we all share a collective duty NOT to splatter our demotivating feelings of doom and despair all over everybody else in public. I don’t care if it makes YOU feel better. This isn’t about YOU. Deal with those feelings outside of public venues.

The scammers discourse is just indulgences rehashed. Scammers are selling redemption in a fallen world. The reason that people defend the scammers is because they think that everyone, including you, is damned without buying moral salvation.

This is—it bears repeating—ethnic cleansing and a war crime. It feels utterly pointless to say, and roughly equivalent to screaming into the void, but the United States should not be supporting or providing any aid to a state that has ethnic cleansing as a policy position.

The way I put it to students: if a machine can do it and you can't, why does an employer need you?

I think the problem with this line of thinking is that people who cheat their way through everything are rarely productive members of society blocked by a credential. Engaging in this behavior can lead to some pretty ruinous consequences when you have no competencies you can actually sell.

This is absolutely on point. This is why for every one of my courses I make a calendar, which has links to every day's presentation, and inside a day's presentation it links to each thing that students will do.

I think this is because business owners are still mostly going off of affect, not material conditions. That said, the underreaction to conservatives saying they will blow up the economy will not continue after they blow up the economy by choice.

My school's 9th grade dean says that so many times parents have not tried even the most basic consequences and that she is in the awkward place of having to tell them to not let them see friends, to take their phone, to turn off the Wi-Fi.

There is definitely something going on with parents. Childrearing changes that are partially downstream of smartphones are wrecking kids

The scam trajectory is almost perfectly in line with us; the total victory of crypto and fraudsters over regulation and the rule of law is right on the path of disaster. The only remaining component to make it truly horrific is for the government to start buying crypto directly like they want to.

Yep. These social media masculinity influencers offer validation and low-cost solutions to having no purpose or having weak social skills when positive role models are asking for supported introspection and self-work. This is a marketplace of ideas failure.

You're like a child who thinks that by not trying no one will find out that they can't. It's not a convincing act, bro.

My guy, you promoted a book that had the same thesis as one I posted. I sure as shit won't trust someone too dumb to even make an argument to write me a reading list.

Guy who can't even express the goals of the strategy he advocates trying to act sanctimonious. You think the military is lost... And you want to use militancy? Better buy yourself a casket, bro.

So much text to say you can't even make a claim. Pathetic.

Ah, so you're unable to make an argument but want to be hostile and sanctimonious about it. No wonder you prefer militancy, it fits your shitty personality.

Man, you're such a loser. Can't even make your own argument.
100
Social Insurance Appreciator @auvvey.bsky.social · 30/04/2025
This isn't a social conflict in a falling state. Overwhelming force exists, and we don't control it. But we can convince them (the military, primarily) to refuse orders to commit violence on us and to protect democracy. If we present as militant it will not move them to that end.
100
Social Insurance Appreciator @auvvey.bsky.social · 30/04/2025
Ah, for a second you tried making a sliver of an argument. Insofar as there is complexity it has more to do with the society and state any given group has to work with. Militancy is really bad at engendering support from those who are not involved, which is exactly the key variable to be pushed.

Social Insurance Appreciator @auvvey.bsky.social · 30/04/2025

Social Insurance Appreciator @auvvey.bsky.social · 30/04/2025
The primary policy changes from militancy is getting the carry of weapons restricted. It's not a great track record. The problem, ultimately, is that militancy feels good. Non-violence in the face of evil is deeply unsatisfying to most people, even when it works best.
100
Social Insurance Appreciator @auvvey.bsky.social · 30/04/2025
The primary point of militancy, insofar as it does not cross into direct armed conflict, is to carry your spears with you as an implied threat. It doesn't work very well when your opponents want conflict to give them the opportunity to respond in force *without* looking like oppressors.
200
Social Insurance Appreciator @auvvey.bsky.social · 30/04/2025
If what you're saying is true then it would be very easy for you to substantiate your argument. Feel free to do that when you're done having a tantrum.
100
Social Insurance Appreciator @auvvey.bsky.social · 30/04/2025
No, it isn't. You aren't going to out violence or out intimidate the authorities. You can get the army on your side by having the police brutalize you, but that's the best we've got.
100
Social Insurance Appreciator @auvvey.bsky.social · 30/04/2025
An armed race war is exactly what Jim Crow advocates scaremongered about. The reason federals didn't intervene on the side of the segregationists is because local and state violent suppression backfired *because* of the nonviolent nature of the major civil rights actions.
100
Social Insurance Appreciator @auvvey.bsky.social · 30/04/2025
Self-defense and nonviolent action are compliments, not substitutes. Militancy and armed conflict are substitutes with nonviolent action, but the record shows clearly that nonviolent action worked to kill Jim Crow and deliver civil rights legislation.
