Another review from one of our borrowers: "Desert is maybe one of the most controversial books about the climate crisis out there. Despite its politics being ambiguous (and even potentially reactionary), its major message: that climate-breakdown-induced societal collapse is now inevitable... 1/3
ID: Picture of the front cover of the 2011 book, Desert, with an image of a desert. The blurb reads: “In our hearts we all know the world will not be ‘saved’. Can active disillusionment be liberatory? What possibilities for liberty and wildness might be closed, or opened up, by unstoppable climate change, increasing surveillance and the expansion and contraction of civilisations?”. End ID.

...It's an excellent introduction to the non-state movements that have the power to radically transform our societies. It's also easy to read and beautifully designed!
ID: A photograph of a third page from the book. An image of the thinker Murray Bookchin is surrounded by a design of Mattise-style torn coloured paper. He is also quoted: "From the largely medieval peasant wars of the sixteenth century Reformation to the modern uprisings of industrial workers and peasants, oppressed peoples have created their own popular forms of community association - potentially the popular infrastructure of a new society... During the course of the revolutions, these associations took the institutional form of local assemblies... or representative councils of mandated recallable deputies". End IDID: A fourth photograph of a page from the book. It is a chapter header design titled: The History of the Commons. And the title is surrounded with asymmetrical red shapes overlayed with topological style lines. End ID.

From our donator: This book examines left movements from workers councils to cooperatives, mutual aid to democratic confederalism, through case studies of Cooperation Jackson, The Paris Commune, The Black Panthers, The Zapatistas, Rojava and many many more...
ID: A photgraph of a page from the book. On a patterned purple background, the text reads: In Proudhon's vision, factories would runn on direct democracy, while self-employed artisans, peasants and coops would trade their products on the market. The state would be abolished, and society would organise through a federation of free communes. Instead of waiting for the revolution, the coops were supposed to eventually grow so large they would eventually displace the capitalist economy. His ideas were prominent at the start of the 1st International and during the Paris Commune. He influenced Marxism, Bakunin's collectivist anarchism and Kropotkin's anarchist communism; however, he was also criticised by these thinkers, not least because of his advocacy of the retention of the market and money in a post-capitalist future and his gradualist view of revolution.
Rochdale Pioneers: In 1844, 28 people from Owenite and Chartist backgrounds set up the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers. The rules they formalised through the Rochdale Principles would become a model for others; the seven cooperative principles (with some minor amendments) are still the basis for cooperatives today. Within a decade, there were over a thousand cooperative stores operating on... End IDID: A photograph of another page from the book. On a pink background and accompanied with a yellow and pink image of a march, where marchers hold up a banner reading "RENT STRIKE", the text reads: Renters Unions. A similar division that exists between workers and bosses/capitalists also exists between landlords and renters. A renters' union (or tenants' union) is a group of tenants who come together to collectively wield their power as renters against landlords and management/development companies. They are democratic organisations that improve conditions in their homes, resist evictions, carry out rent strikes, spread resources about people's rights, address issues that landlords ignore, squat buildings, build housing cooperatives and advocate for wider changes - like rent controls, combating homelessness and the building of affordable homes. Renters' unions help people develop confidence and capacity by collectively empowering people to take direct action without the help of third parties. End ID

Some extracts from the book:
ID: Photograph of a page from the book. Text reads: Although I had come face to face with police brutality at protests and developed anti-state politics from years within the direct action climate movement, I still held the ability to opt out of resistance - and the resulting state violence - more often than not.
Of course it's in the interests of the state for me to believe that the state is on my side. And to an extent, it will be, in its divide and conquer strategies to secure my compliance at the expense of others. By offering some people legitimate forms of 'resistance' within capitalism, while criminalising the existence of those who don't fit within certain parameters, the state invites us to throw other struggles under the bus.
But a freedom that is based on the oppression of others isn't truly freedom. This is why countless revolutionaries, from the Zapatistas to Audre Lorde, have argued that a crucial step toward collective liberation is recognising that our struggles are linked. The challenge we face is to find ways to wage resistance - both in acts of collective self-defence, and inside our own heads. If we don't get rid of the state inside our heads, we'll lose sight of how interconnected our fights are, and we'll sell each other out... ID: Photograph of a page from the book. Text reads: 10: Struggling.
"Sometimes the revolution feels a lot like hard work" - Natalia.
"Fight my dear, fight strong! By fighting we exist. By fighting we become free and beautiful and more. By fighting we love." - Şehîd Beritan, a Kurdish guerilla in whose memory the first all-women's guerilla forces were created.
Life in Rojava was not what I expected. I was taking part in one of the most effective revolutionary movements of our time, working towards a vision I deeply believed in. I lived side by side with revolutionaries from around the world, and was learning more that I had learned for many years. Yet a lot of the time I found myself frustrated and unhappy, unable to find beauty and meaning in the work I was doing.
One afternoon, I found myself hiding out in the stifling hot, wet air of the greenhouse. I went through the motions of weeding, but what I was really doing was surrounding myself by growing things and letting the familiarity of clay soil on my hand soothe - or at least distract - me from my unhappiness. I had tried to come to Rojava without too many expectations, but somewhere in the back of my mind I expected time to move in epic sweeps, like a camera panning in slow motion across a climactic scene. Instead, time felt broken and awkward... End ID.

They are still at risk of eviction in the future but this buys more time for them to resist -- a broadcast chat has been made to keep everyone updated on the campaign to relocate them to a better site! Solidarity with travellers! Well done to everyone who helped today! ✊✊✊

☀️VICTORY☀️ The bailiffs and police have left! No eviction today! Thanks to amazing mobilisation of the Edinburgh community, the traveller community in Granton resisted an unlawful eviction of the site they've been living on for 7 years.
