Join us for a communal reading and discussion of Rent Strikes, Then and Now by Isaac Rose and Siobhan Donnachie at the library this Saturday! Following on from our discussion last session on anarchists in tenant organising in the US, this month's reading will focus on the history of rent (1/2)
The graphic includes two pictures, on the top half a black and white picture of white graffiti on a wall that says 'pay no rent' and underneath a red-tinted picture of a group of folk at a demonstration carrying a big banner in front of them saying 'rent strike'. On top of these pictures the words 'defending our homes against landlord tyranny', 'rent strikes, then and now', and 'by Isaac Rose and Siobhan Donnachie' are written in white bold font.A plain green background with text written on top. The text reads: '2pm to 3pm designated quiet hour. no music or events: just books.' and '3pm to 4pm, reading circle on 'defending our homes against landlord tyranny. Rent strikes then and now. We'll read and discuss the text together - no preparation needed. happy smiley'

❗Urgent call out to oppose eviction of traveller community❗
🔴 URGENT CALL OUT 🔴
▶️ Tomorrow 8am
❗ OPPOSE THE EVICTION OF A TRAVELLER COMMUNITY IN EDINBURGH

A traveller community is at imminent risk of eviction by the police this Friday (13th Feb), 9am. We are organising a mass mobilisation to support the community and oppose this. The community have been asking for the scottish government to find them another location and instead the police are now evicting both families including two highly pregnant women with nowhere to go. The plan is to show up at 8am and protest at the entrance to the site.

▶️ SCALP backoffice will be open and LOs will be present

▶️ Police dogs are likely to be present so take this into account if you are afraid of dogs!

Solidarity with our neighbours! Against state repression of traveller communities! ✊

ROJAVA UNDER ATTACK As members of the Autonomous library, we stand in full solidarity with the people of the Autonomous administration of North East Syria / Rojava and the democratic, ecological, women's revolution as they face invasion by religous fascist forces directed by HTS.
What's happening in Rojava?

The Autonomous Administration of North-East Syria, also known as Rojava, is home to over 4 million inhabitants and represents a rare example of what a successful socialist revolution can be. Today, these populations are under attack. Swipe to read our explainer of the situation. What is Rojava?

Kurds and other ethnic minorities have faced persecution for decades under the regime of Bashar al-Assad and Turkish fascist politics. In 2012, the inhabitants of Kurdish areas of Syria rose up and declared autonomy. They founded the Democratic Administration of Autonomous North East Syria (DAANES), following a political ideology based on democracy, anticapitalism, women's liberation, and ecology. DAANES was violently targeted by ISIS in the mid 2010s, but Rojava fighters fought off and ultimately defeated ISIS in the region, at the cost of over 13,000 lives. Now they're under threat again.

[photo of a woman in military clothes, black Kurdish scarf around her head, turning to face the camera, smiling, and doing a peace sign with her hand]What's going on today?
The Syrian transitional government, led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), declared an all-out war against the DAANES a week ago. They espouse ultra conservative politics, and in the year since they've taken power, they have committed war crimes and met opposition with murderous repression, in particular in areas inhabited by ethnic minorities. In many cities of North-East Syria, traumatised by ISIS occupation, populations fear a return to authoritarian religious rule. For good reason: as they advance, HTS are swarming prison camps where ISIS fighters are detained, freeing thousands of them, while kidnapping and abusing Kurdish women they manage to take hostage.
In just a week, HTS have already taken over 80% of the oil-rich DAANES territory. Kurds from all over the Middle East are rushing to Rojava to join the resistance. In Scotland, protests have taken place every day in Glasgow and Edinburgh, as diaspora Kurds demand political action from the UK government. This isn't about unification.

The little amount of reporting done on the topic frames the conflict as a push by HTS to "unify" Syria. In reality, the confederalist system of the DAANES is already a stable, effective model of democratic cohabitation for all ethnic and religious groups of the area. In fact, most institutions working there are purposefully trying to reach out and collaborate with democratic and feminist organisations throughout Syria and the Middle-East as a whole. HTS's goals are not unity — it's about land grab, homogenisation, and authoritarian centralism. However, as they attempt to push the DAANES into the sole borders of Kurdish-majority areas, resistance increasingly risks falling into Kurdish nation-state discourses. This would be a great loss to the ideals of multicultural autonomy that the DAANES represents.
