Exactly this. The Needs-led model doesn't give vulnerable people legal protection. Employers and schools will have even more of an excuse for not making reasonable adjustments. Accommodations will be seen as optional where funding is short. It's extremely naive to think Needs-led is a solution.

Mental Health Review report. I can't imagine how it feels for autistic & ADHDers & their families on the waiting list right now or seeking an assessment. The gov't is removing legal protection for masses at all ages. We need to be vocal when the Needs-led approach doesn't work. #neurodiversity

1/2 🤭Chuckling a bit reading the Mental Health Review report. Glossary of Terms says *Neurotypical* is one associated term with neurodiversity. *Neurotypical* was originally coined satirically by neurodiversity movement advocates to label those who pathologised us outside of the constructed norm.

Support for autism and ADHD isn't just about practical things and self- awareness. A diagnosis helps (or should help) friends, family, colleagues, teachers understand reasons for behaviour so *they* can adjust their expectations and own behaviour. This improves relationships.

It's absurd how most NTs completely accept there's variation in the NT population, but think there's none in the autistic population. There's variety in all neurotypes. That they think there isn't suggests that they're viewing autism from the medical model of disability.

This resonates. When non-autistics do thin-slicing, they notice a difference in seconds. They can choose to accept it as just that, a difference which needs accommodating, or can get ableist and define difference as a deficit. Managers and HR have a responsibility to set a culture of acceptance.

Needs-led support is idealised. It would only work if there were sufficient universal and targeted support without a diagnosis AND understanding and acceptance of conditions throughout the lifespan. Neither are apparent. Delay/ failure to diagnose causes harm.
