I've been listening to stuff about #AI . I don't understand the concept of reward in this context. How does a non-feeling entity experience reward? I wouldn't have thought they had the capacity for pleasure if they are not sentient.

Much as I think that #autism should be removed from the DSM limiting diagnosis is a very bad idea. It would be better to abolish formal diagnosis, especially since they're saying everyone will get appropriate support. (What then is the point of a diagnosis if everyone is entitled to support)

Every time the Labour government does this, it not only suggests that the broad thrust of these direct far-right actions – led by thugs with convictions for violence – are legitimate, they explicitly suggest they are *more* legitimate than left-wing protests. It is as contemptible as it is stupid.

i've been chewing on why i think this is so great, and i think at bottom it's that it's such *ordinary* speech. clearly she's thought about this, clearly she has values she's comfortable expressing, but she's not speaking as though she's Making A Political Statement. just plain, earnest language

I notice the Met weather forecast has stopped flagging up current heat alerts on relevant days. Seems to be following a national strategy of pretending the climate catastrophe isn't happening so we can continue with enable business as usual. However, ignoring reality makes things worse not better.

I am fortunate to live near a council run cool space i near enough to brave the heat to get there. I was the only person there initially but after a couple of hours there was an alarm and the staff seemed panicked and everyone in the leisure centre had to leave.

I feel conflicted when I am helped by a patient call centre worker and then their employer sends me this satisfaction survey. On the one hand I want to help the employee, on the other I don't want to be part of the constant surveillance on performance by employers.

It's notable that the seemingly endless catalogue of sexual offences committed by priests & ministers is never turned into a narrative that 'all clergy' are a threat, the way any offence by a trans person is used to collectively smear an entire group. yeah I feel this way. I also think that "keeping your brain in shape" is going to become a thing that people talk about in the same way they talk about "keeping your body in shape". In the sense that it's now something we have to worry about because our environment doesn't force us to do it.

I had several requests for feedback today. I object how corporate employers try and get everyone to report back on their staff, I think its an unacceptable imposition on customers and over surveillance of staff, however I feel concern that not filling these in could impact negatively on the staff.

The attack on the synagogue in Manchester and the attack on the mosque in Sussex are completely horrifying. Violence anywhere is terrible of course but it takes a certain tenor when it’s clear that people are being targeted because of their identity. and criminalizing protest won’t fix it. like ??

I am Jewish. I grieve the murders. I support peace in Gaza. I see murderous rhetoric on Insta/TikTok from people feeling Israel's actions in Gaza justify every trope they've ever heard. This war has not made Jewish people safer, including the hostages which it was apparently meant to be saving.

Apparently Reform is saying they would retract settled status. Besides being nasty to the individuals concerned the rerospective impact of changes like this undermines trust in the government and would exclude from the UK people doing necesary jobs. This this policy apears to be pure scapegoating.

I have stopped ironing my clothes (I only started doing this years ago when I moved out of London) as a peronal response protest re the fashion for torn jeans. Unfortunately the problem this sort of personal protest is nobody knows they are a protest so they are stunningly ineffective
