New tensions arise after the death of a legendary pirate captain—and the navy commodore claiming his flag. Bahji and Merisande find themselves pulled deeper into a conspiracy from opposite ends. It will demand sacrifices neither is prepared to make.

The iron blade of the dagger was sharp at Bahji's pulse. It scraped the delicate skin, and a shiver ran down her spine. The officer's wrist was slim, skin the same shade as the burnished copper coins in her pouch. White jacket cuffs neat and pressed. Unlikely to stain it with blood. Floorboards creaked in the hallway, but the blade kept her quiet, and the fingers kneading her hip.

That voice again, light but raspy, cinnamon in rum. Lips brushed her ear. "You've found yourself in a Navy Lieutenant's room. What were your intentions, pirate?"

Bahji tilted her neck and warm breath rolled down the length of it. Her voice was a hoarse whisper, "Wayward, I assure you."

Together they traverse ruins and follow a trail of flower language from village to village to unearth what led to the dark age of information. But Juniper starts to question her identity when they uncover that the woman she modeled herself after was not the hero she believed.

Necromancer Nevell of Farlay cannot die, not since surviving the plague as a youth. Now he works as a priest to the god-king, summoned to protect His Majesty during the plague season. But when a mysterious spirit is sighted and nobleman is found dead, Nevell’s reputation gets called into question. His only alibi is the cagey, annoyingly handsome Lord Margrave, whose reluctance to help Nevell clear his name threatens Nevell’s clergy rank—the only thing protecting his home from the horrors of the plague.

EXCERPT

“Have you no sense?” Nevell stepped between the man and the dying girl’s bed. His magic persisted, but the man carried a lantern that brought too much light into the room, threatening to wash out the spell. “A priest is at work. You should not be here.”

The man paid him no mind, instead peering over Nevell’s shoulder. “I’ve been called senseless before,” he said, speaking with the same grace his attire implied. “Is she…?”

“Dead? Nearly. The spirits are about her. You may have let them out.”

“Her mother has tended to her since this morn.” The man still didn’t look at Nevell. “The spirits will have fled already, if they intended to.”

“Spirits often lack intention.”

“You would know best.” The man took a few steps toward the bed, only stopping when Nevell grabbed his shoulder. He tried to shrug out of the grip, but Nevell held fast. “Father, we can save her—”

“Nay,” Nevell said. “She’s gone.”

The field was on fire. It swept over the flowers and tall grasses with ferocity, leaving nothing but smoldering remains and broken hope in its wake. Smoke filled the air, low lying like a blanket. The acrid smell of smoke and burnt flowers was suffocating. The flowers, which had once been beautiful and fragrant, transformed into ugly ash and malodorous fumes.

Still, Theo ran, the muscles in his legs burning and his lungs filling with smoke. He was a runner, in more ways than one, and he knew the fatigue that came from legs pushed past the limit. He should be able to run faster than this. The mechanical motion of his legs was hindered by a heaviness like lead weights tied to his ankles. He should be faster, lighter.

But maybe he had been running longer than he knew. He couldn’t remember what had come before. He had been spawned into existence, an apparition. There was nothing prior, only darkness and the cool touch of wet stone.
