She shouldn’t have recognized it as such. The fish were a threat to society no matter their age. Creatures so vicious could hardly even be called animals, let alone people. Yet when she saw those eyes, all she could think was child. The same age she had been when her world nearly ended. The petrified whimper that drifted over the waves sounded the same as hers. In that moment, time stopped, and the difference that stood out to her wasn’t the sleek silver tail, but this: when Cordelia was scared, the people she loved had stepped in to make sure she knew she wasn’t alone.
The tiny mer had no one to stand in between it and the crossbow bolt pointed between its eyes. There was only the tremble of Cordelia’s own treacherous hands, and the fleeting, impossible thought that crossed her mind.
