Agent’s Guide. Inspired by Frankenstein. A Malignant Game. One monster wasn’t enough. Adult speculative fiction, 90k words. By BB Lorik. Pictures two plague doctors in reverse mirror of each other, with a heart between them.

Pitch: when Mora Grail learns the controversial science she betrayed her alchemy roots to study in secrecy is at risk of being abolished, she reluctantly plays a precarious game to ensure its survival-if only to follow through with the forbidden research that led her there in the first place. Picture of a heart.

Comp: Blood Over Bright Haven- features indoctrination and the cost of truth in pursuit of prosperity. The Resurrectionist-set in the Romantic Era, when radical science is in its infancy. Frankenstein-follows Frankenstein’s heretical galvanism. Atlas of Unknowable Things-mixed science and the occult deep within the traditions of dark academia. The Hunger Games- individuals perform under the glare of mass media, vintage style

Snippet: Ch1. The New Prometheus. “When I first set ink to paper to record this practice I termed parapathology, I did so not as a seasoned scholar, but as a man haunted. For years, I believed the energy of nature I studied was a part of science, nothing more. But after the events of Inglostadt, I understood it was actually magic—a force seen as evil by the mortal world, nonetheless an essential part of the universe. And I had forcibly accessed it. My only regret is that I wish I had come to that realization sooner and spared myself the tragedy of creating a monster.” Authors note from Parapathology: Galvanic Secrets by Victor Frankenstein, Volume 1. Fine focus was perhaps the greatest feature of the microscope. A brilliant device, if a bit unsettling. For it exposed a world unseen by the naked eye, revealing just how little we knew. Not that society would ever acknowledge this truth about nature, as it went against everything they believed in. Unlike them, I refused to be left in the dark. Especially in matters involving the death of my family.
