Half of all baby books are "this is sue. Sue drinks fruit juice. Do you too like fruit juice like sue?" And the other half of baby books emotionally devastate you for weeks

Listening to humans and Dr Jerome Goddard talks so much like my family in Alabama it's unnerving It's such a lovely accent and cadence, its wild you don't hear it more often in media

WHY DIDNT ANYBODY TELL ME THAT THE TERM PIPE DREAM IS ABOUT SMOKING OPIUM FROM A PIPE AND HALLUCINATING THAT CONTEXT COMPLETELY CHANGES WHAT I THOUGHT THE MEANING WAS

look, as a programmer, if the goblins that run around inside your computer demand you turn it off and back on again in order for something to work, you should just turn it off and back on again fighting with the goblins has always been a losing battle. we've lost so many good people already

There were a few years at work where any time somebody was sick I reacted in Slack with a hospital emoji. Slack even kept it in the recently used box It turns out it wasn't a hospital- it was a "love hotel". I never noticed because it's so tiny And none of my coworkers told me!
Screenshot of slack message from Coworker Margaret, saying "I can't make it into work today, I am dying of illness"

Underneath are two reactions, a get well soon emoji and what appears to be a hospital

nobody make fun of me for saying some nerd shit but I never feel quite as alive as when code stuff breaks at work and everybody is panicking It's high-stakes programming like in a hacker scene in a movie. I am the only one who can save them. Olivia Rodrigo is providing dramatic background music.

Fun fact, when you do a custom puzzle in Hank's 4x3 game, when he says "the whole puzzle is in the URL", it's base64 encoded. (I'm going to spoil my own custom puzzle, but you can click here to play first if you want)

I love this 1912 newspaper report on stegosaurus They had no idea how rad they made it sound
From Wikipedia:
A reproduction of a stegosaurus from a 1912 edition of Popular Mechanics reprinted in The Cincinnati Enquirer with the headline "Was Most Grotesque Animal" and caption "Stegosaur, who lived in Utah ages ago, is a freak of nature."

My brother in law asked "do you know what you'll do for Open Sauce next year?" I said no, I'm too busy working on my project for this year He said "you should do one where you let people waterboard you"

TIL I realized (and double checked) that "going down a rabbit hole" as a saying comes from Alice in Wonderland In hindsight it feels obvious but I still haven't recovered

Idk if anybody else will find this wild but we went to an alpaca farm today and I learned that alpacas and llamas are in the camel family. After you learn that and then look at one, it's crazy how quickly your brain goes "oh shit that looks like a camel in a fur coat"
Alpacas with freshly shaved fur, with fluffy little hairdos on the tops of their heads where they weren't shaved

Can anybody think of art that is made specifically for the sense of touch? I can think of some for all of the other senses, but touch is hard. Music is sound art. Perfume is smell art. But what about touch? Does a massage count as touch art?

There's a kind of joke that nobody ever laughs at and we need a word for it It's when everybody is talking about something bad and somebody makes a joke that's essentially "It's worse!" and people sigh Like "AI took our jobs" and somebody says "Well at least it made electricity more expensive!"

Sometimes I think it's important to embrace that dinosaur is more of a ✨vibe ✨ than a classification for normal people Yeah technically birds are dinosaurs, and pterodactyls are NOT dinosaurs but some people just want their favorite dinosaur to be mosasaurus and not be told that's a wrong answer

Can you imagine spending 9 days in a little space ship, falling back to earth, and then having to wait half an hour before they open the door and let you out I mean obviously things could have gone wrong and I bet they're thankful they're safe, but damn I bet they want out of that little tin can

Look at this absolutely gorgeous picture of the moon eclipsing the sun from Artemis images.nasa.gov/details/art0...
A photograph of the dark side of the moon eclipsing the sun. A large soft halo is formed around the moon from the light of the sun behind it. Stars are visible around the moon.

rocket launches with people in them are nuts What do you mean the people are just in the little tiny dot at the top And most of the rocket is just fuel And then you see how big the blast is We got the best scientists to essentially strap a few brave souls to the top of a bomb, and you can tell

Obviously there must be evolutionary pressure and hormones that cause this but it's absolutely wild how much I love our baby Objectively she's a potato that cries and poops But I would happily spend an eternity cuddling with her I never even cared about babies before How does that happen

Project Hail Mary is important because we don't have enough hopeful sci-fi it's so hard to do because plot *requires* bad things to happen and the default is for the sci-fi thing to be what goes wrong. Aliens kill everyone, robots take over, the miracle cure has consequences, etc

Apollo 15 did a demonstration on the moon where they dropped a hammer and a feather at the same time to show that without air resistance they both fall at the same speed They didn't pick up the feather afterwards Now for the rest of time there will be a piece of a dinosaur sitting on the moon
A photo of the landing site on the moon of Apollo 15, featuring moon dirt, lots of aluminum foil looking debris, some astronaut footprints, and a small white feather

I want to film a dinosaur movie in the next few years and the biggest hurdle I've had so far in writing and planning is that there was no grass Grass didn't actually spread and become the way it is today until AFTER the Cretaceous How the fuck do I avoid GRASS when I'm filming It's everywhere

Programming is like talking to a genie. Your code might work but half the job is thinking critically about the EXACT WORDS you used to make sure it can't go horribly wrong while still technically achieving the wish (for now) AI code is great at making wishes, but bad at double checking the wishes
