No one can fill this void left by the theft of basic research funding.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

National Science Foundation Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress (Gift Article)
The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

Oh I know. I have not mastered the appropriate facial expression for learning that someone queried, THEN reached out.

Well...sometimes people hire a freelance editor right after they've sent queries (I truly have no idea why someone would do this, but they do) and then receive professional advice to slow their roll. They shouldn't have sent the query but sending the proposal as is would be worse 😬

whenever an author says they used AI to check for "style" I think: that's what superegos is for! that's what dialectical thought is for! that's what generalized anxiety that makes you question everything you've ever thought is for! that's what a social-media-tuned knack for reading the room is for!

Audra Wolfe @audrajwolfe.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Omg the worst is when non-historians discovery chronology and think it means telling things PRECISELY IN ORDER. This is not, in actuality, how successful chronological storytelling works! We gotta hear about *meaningful links* between things!

Always surprised how much of last-pass developmental editing boils down to removing extraneous phrases and claims. Less is so so so often more.

either it is in principle possible to set up appropriate safeguards (in which case the "AI alignment" story is just as much about who gets to set them up and enforce them as it is about the content of the safeguards) or it is not (in which case we should be talking about transnational moratoria)

A7 #stetchat "Thank you for your interest, but The Outside Reader does not provide editorial services for articles/indexing/proofreading/copyediting. Try so-and-so." Sometimes they reply that they didn't actually want copyediting, they want developmental editing. That's a different problem lol.

It's much harder to do this on an intake call, when someone has passed through the first email filter and you just get a bad vibe. Deep breath then something like, "You know, the more we talk, I'm not actually the right fit for this because [something]. Call so-and-so." #stetchat

A3: I'd screenshot that in the text for my records and flag it in the manuscript. Depending on the AI policy in place, that could mean stopping work on the project; at the very least, a section in the editorial letter about transparency and trust with contractors and readers. #StetChat

A2 #stetchat I HATE THIS. Usually some iteration of "I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I am currently reserving capacity for my existing clients, and experience tells me that it is not in your interest to work with an editor who feels overwhelmed. I wish you the best of luck with your project."

A1 #stetchat I have experienced this. I write to the client requesting a call, explaining that I have some concerns about "uneven citation practices." Then we talk about the multiple levels in which this is unacceptable (and will ruin their career). Their response determines whether I fire them.
