For the last day of #InverteFest I give you one of my favorite #spiders! I love seeing Sierra Dome Spiders, the woods in the old site of Never Never Land at Point Defiance Park were full of them. I love their intricate and unique individual markings, and how the threads of their sheet webs glitter.

late to #invertefest but just wanted to show off that our yard is blessed with multiple generations of native Banded Alder Borer Beetles! They arrived en masse after we kept log sections of a problem tree that had to be cut down, and their offspring have been slowly pupating and emerging ever since.

Donated an Anna’s Hummingbird to the Natural History Museum at University of Puget Sound yesterday! Poor guy hit one of the big ground floor windows of the science building. Now he can help their collection of knowledge.
A dead adult male Anna’s Hummingbird, lying on a crumpled brown napkin, beak facing left with wings against his side. His coloration is mostly dark iridescent green and black, with some rumpled gray of the downy edges that stick out between his wing and neck.
The iridescent purple of his gorget is slightly visible from this angle.A front facing view of the male Anna’s hummingbird, still on the brown napkin, but showing a brighter angle of the iridescent purple feathers of his gorget.

Spouse and I visited my childhood beach hangout today to take pictures for @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social’s lighthouse photo submission call! So nice to see it after all the renovations, the tide was in but the weather was perfect for just sitting and enjoying the view.
Wide shot of the water at the Browns Point Lighthouse Park. The lighthouse is a tall, angular, white building with windows just below the lamp, surrounded by a metal fence at the base, and to the right of it in the foreground is a figure (my spouse) standing on the divider between the beach and the sidewalk running towards the lighthouse.

My best photographs of 2025, a short thread. A tobacco hornworm on one of its favorite foods, a garden tomato plant (Texas, May 2025). This one makes the cut because it is more aesthetically pleasing than I was aiming for, somehow.
In middle of a graceful, fibonacci-curved spring tomato leaf sits a large green caterpillar in side view, its front curled as if in prayer, in an ethereal soft light, slightly backlit.
