This is Jerry Lawson. He invented the video game cartridge for the Fairchild Channel F system. Because of his invention, many consoles had cartridges and CD formats and would become the norm. The Atari 2600, NES, Genesis, and many consoles wouldn't exist without him. Happy Black History Month.

I’ve used an Empress buffer/junction box ever since I started using outboard gear, but only the input is buffered, which is inconvenient. So I’m replacing w/a MusicomLAB System Interface, which has an output buffer as well as a switch to turn the input buffer off. Korea makes great stuff. :)

How to get heavy guitar tones when tuning low: It’s a simple deduction. You use solo boosts because you don’t have enough gain on the thinner strings. You need less gain on the thicker, lower strings. So the lower you go, the more you reduce the gain. That’s all you need to do.

I can attest to this. My guitar recordings improved significantly after switching from plugins to outboard gear — not because it sounded better, but because it made me more conscious of how guitar tone “works” and how to get what I was after. It’s a lot more inspiring than loading up plugins too.

For months, I thought hard about what it could mean for a song to be objectively “good”. The real answer is, of course, that there is no answer. But the conclusion I reached was that the closest thing to “objectively good” was “honest”. A song that reveals the artist’s feelings and perspectives.

How to get heavier guitars: 1. gain -> DOWN / gives chords room to breathe 2. mids -> UP / allows you to be heard in the mix 3. don't encroach on the bassist Below D, stick to fifths + octaves. Below G, stick to single notes. Exceptions for everything. Start there.

Different people will have different ideas about what "this genre" or "that genre" mean. In a sense, no one is "wrong". In another, there's a collective understanding that "this" means "this" + "that" means "that"... But the lines are always blurred. Well, doesn't that go for most things in life?

By the way, several people (including Victor!) thought I used a 7-string guitar on the original version of Darker Side. That's a 6-string guitar in standard tuning! No pitch shifting or anything like that. Playthrough coming shortly. :)
