Lego Batman has me on a Batman nostalgia and by biggest takes on a revisit are: - Batman '66 is an absolutely amazing superhero spoof. So much fun. - Joel Schumacher's films are flawed, but their art direction is freaking great. I love how much of his aesthetic has made it into various Batman games.

I just watched Angel's Egg for the first time and was blown away. I'm often guilty of trying too hard to "get" more expressionistic art like this at the expense of just experiencing it, but the visuals and atmosphere were so incredible that it basically overrode my desire to do so. Amazing film!

I'm kicking myself for not having played Final Fantasy Tactics sooner. Nabbed Ivalice Chronicles as the next thing from my backlog and this job system is incredible. I was initially worried it might be too complex for my personal tolerance level, but so far I'm loving it.

There is an underappreciated art to NPC dialogue writing that so far Lego Batman is nailing. Works best when it is mostly mundane conversation with wild curveballs that snap you out of what you are doing. Just like real life.

Seeing a friend's health almost hit zero when they are across the map, but you manage to kill something to gain a level and recharge everyone's health feels so dang good. Very fun piece of design.

Another backlog game take: Ravenswatch is great! Characters are all fun and all feel distinct. I especially dig the abilities that interact with the day/night cycle. Also, I love that groups can split up for a bit and then regroup for harder fights.

I have close to zero knowledge about Backrooms as a property but I love me a good horror movie. Really dug the movie. Loved the clear video game inspirations behind it. Reminded me a lot of Channel Zero which was a great horror tv show that I wish had 20 more seasons.

Couldn't begin to explain the narrative of Reanimal, but this game has the best use of fog/limited visibility since Silent Hill 2. The art direction throughout is absolutely phenomenal and it's one of the only games where I stuck to the recommended low brightness setting. Atmosphere was 10/10

Backlog #5: Got around to Spider-Man 2. Not as good as 1 or Miles Morales but still great. This series and Red Dead 2 are pretty much the only open world games where I never want to fast travel. For Spider-Man specifically, it's because the movement controls are so so satisfying.

Still, while I have my share of criticisms, I've also been thinking about it a lot more than most games I play. Everything feels very intent driven even if I don't think it all works, and it's overall vibe felt excitingly singular to me: introspective, surreal, somber, and darkly funny.

Gonna have to think more about it's use of deliberately "game-y" elements for the arcade style UI, pixel graphics for flashbacks, and a deliberately meaningless leveling system. I think I grasp why they are all in there for the most part, but a lot of it felt superficial to me.

Backlog #4: Played Indika and while not everything worked for me, it was still a solid experience. Mostly narrative driven, but there was some solid puzzle design it it. The standout for me was the environmental design though, and reminded me of Terry Gilliam, Marc Caro, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Backlog #3 done with Thank Goodness You're Here. More proof that "walking simulators" make for incredible interactive experiences no matter what detractors say. All of the comedy bits here land because of how they are connected to repeatedly exploring the same environments and seeing what changes.

I was also really impressed by how much mileage they got out of a limited pool of enemy types. There are (I think) three main ones for most of the games, and while I initially thought they were going to get stale pretty quick, the designers mix and match them in ways that kept me on my toes.

Silent Hill 2 Remake completed as the next game in my backlog. Never played the first one, but loved it. No idea how much of the level design made it over from the original, but I thought it was fantastic even by modern standards.

Any of the webcomics on here: rice-boy.com. Super inspired character design and world building. I'm on Vattu now and an especially cool thing is how much you see the creator improve after each series. The page list seems daunting but each story can be knocked out in a few days even at a lazy pace.

Slowly chipping away at my game backlog by finally playing Cocoon and wow... Absolutely fantastic game. The puzzle design is great, but also it's incredible how they are able to communicate all the wonky, plane hopping shenanigans without any part of the game feeling like a tutorial.

I am happy with the colors and that shaded gradient at the top... Granted I did color pick and then only slightly adjust most of these colors from the film still I was referencing so I can't pat myself on the back too much for the palate :P

Even if I'm not happy the final piece, it was a good exercise in showing me how I really gotta clamp down on my line work (and dialing my max line widths way down). I don't mind thicker lines, but without a more controlled hand they just look sloppy. Also wasted a bunch of time redoing bad lines.
