Absolutely. Only addressing salaries justifies the problems teachers face instead of solving them. No one wants to be paid to *endure* issues they face; they’ll wear down and eventually leave the profession.

This will sound like a hot take, but both Tears of the Kingdom and Silksong. Both excellent games, but TOTK talk simmered more quickly than I expected into general BOTW/TOTK discussion, and Silksong couldn’t possibly sustain years‘ worth of anticipatory hype outside of a hardcore fanbase.

Take a break from being depressed that everything you love is being destroyed by slop for a moment and let me tell you about the beautiful symbiotic relationship between graffiti writers, train yard workers, and model train enthusiasts.

I might take the under on # of courses. The people who write to me and say they're teaching AI integrated with teaching writing aren't teaching writing anymore. They've moved on to automated text production, which...fine. But that "course" needs two class periods before you've reached a terminus.

Airplanes are great for novellas. I‘ll grab a book with <200 pages and finish it before landing. This book then becomes a memory marker for the trip (“That was the trip during which I read…”). I’ll interrupt my usual in-progress novel for this ritual.

I heard someone use it in reference to music in Dynasty Warriors 2–5 or so, and I’ve always taken it to imply the sort of bland, royalty-free distorted electric guitars of no known merit.

Putting AI competency on the same level as numeracy and literacy is hallucinatory. Becoming literate is the greatest change that happens to a human being in their lifetime. Giving the suicide-baiting machine to children en mass is not likely to develop their critical reasoning habits

I think it’s an understandable gameplay hook that clearly appeals to a lot of folks, but speaking to the original post’s concerns about feeling out-of-touch (and my own feeling that I want to spend my time differently), the gameplay loop asks a lot of its players. You have to fully commit to it.

A lot of the positive replies point to the social aspects and how players treat it differently than other shooters, and that’s fair. But there’s a wide gulf between “I want a fun game to play” and “I play this game just to feel something”. I don’t want to spend time gambling on the latter.

Practical Grammar. Professors told me I was a great writer, so I didn’t want to take what felt like a remedial skill course. Starting language over again with grammar was like remapping my brain. Diagramming sentences showed me that I was an amateur who knew nothing. I now teach practical grammar.

I will add the following: our students lack the research skills required to audit an LLM essay for errors. They don’t arrive on campus with these skills; we teach it to them over four long years. So throwing freshmen in the deep end and saying “swim your way to a shore of rectitude” is folly.

Finally! 🤩 Our position piece: Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia: doi.org/10.5281/zeno... We unpick the tech industry’s marketing, hype, & harm; and we argue for safeguarding higher education, critical thinking, expertise, academic freedom, & scientific integrity. 1/n
Abstract: Under the banner of progress, products have been uncritically adopted or
even imposed on users — in past centuries with tobacco and combustion engines, and in
the 21st with social media. For these collective blunders, we now regret our involvement or
apathy as scientists, and society struggles to put the genie back in the bottle. Currently, we
are similarly entangled with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. For example, software updates are rolled out seamlessly and non-consensually, Microsoft Office is bundled with chatbots, and we, our students, and our employers have had no say, as it is not
considered a valid position to reject AI technologies in our teaching and research. This
is why in June 2025, we co-authored an Open Letter calling on our employers to reverse
and rethink their stance on uncritically adopting AI technologies. In this position piece,
we expound on why universities must take their role seriously toa) counter the technology
industry’s marketing, hype, and harm; and to b) safeguard higher education, critical
thinking, expertise, academic freedom, and scientific integrity. We include pointers to
relevant work to further inform our colleagues.Figure 1. A cartoon set theoretic view on various terms (see Table 1) used when discussing the superset AI
(black outline, hatched background): LLMs are in orange; ANNs are in magenta; generative models are
in blue; and finally, chatbots are in green. Where these intersect, the colours reflect that, e.g. generative adversarial network (GAN) and Boltzmann machine (BM) models are in the purple subset because they are
both generative and ANNs. In the case of proprietary closed source models, e.g. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and
Apple’s Siri, we cannot verify their implementation and so academics can only make educated guesses (cf.
Dingemanse 2025). Undefined terms used above: BERT (Devlin et al. 2019); AlexNet (Krizhevsky et al.
2017); A.L.I.C.E. (Wallace 2009); ELIZA (Weizenbaum 1966); Jabberwacky (Twist 2003); linear discriminant analysis (LDA); quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA).Table 1. Below some of the typical terminological disarray is untangled. Importantly, none of these terms
are orthogonal nor do they exclusively pick out the types of products we may wish to critique or proscribe.Protecting the Ecosystem of Human Knowledge: Five Principles

If you're using AI to write essays, eulogies, a text to your wife, I do think less of you as a person. Ceding your mental and creative abilities to a machine is an embarrassing thing and people should be ashamed to admit doing it in public.
