Cat orbits for anyone curious. You can ignore the caption's technobabble and just meow.
Plot of the standard map showing the angle (theta) on the horizontal axis from 0 to 2pi and action (I) on the vertical axis from 0 to 2pi. There are a bunch of dots scattered sporadically. There are two regions showing concentric ovals. The final outer loop looks like an oval with pointy cat ears.

Caption: Figure 1.10: Behaviour of the standard map with the stochasticity parameter K = 5. This shows a saved snapshot of an interactive “click plot" in a Jupyter notebook where clicking within each panel sets a trajectory’s initial condition. Each trajectory is iterated 1000 times. The horizontal and vertical axes are periodic (i.e. mod 2π). The shape of the period 2 trajectory resembles a cat close to the separatrix, which I call “cat orbits". A version of the code for this click plot is available on github at https://github.com/aobertas/standard-map.

Why was I allowed to submit this?
When K = 5, the shape of the period 2 trajectory resembles a cat close to the separatrix (shown in Fig. 1.10). I describe these as “cat orbits". I am not sure if these trajectories have been noted in the literature, nor do I know if any other trajectories have been previously referred to as cat orbits. I don’t have much to say about these cat orbits except that they are very cute^{footnote 28}.

footnote 28: I regret the timing of this discovery (the day before this dissertation’s submission deadline), as I would much
rather have written a dissertation on cat orbits.

The context for this is that Johannes Kepler's mum (Katharina Kepler) was arrested for witchcraft, possibly in relation to his story Somnium (17th century sci-fi about demons on the moon).

Ok activists and nerds... I promised that I was SO MAD ABOUT HOW CONFLICT-AVOIDANT "CENTRISTS" UNDERMINE RESISTANCE TO FASCISM that I would resort to math to make this point and that I would write it up in a paper. So, here ya go. Share, enjoy, and get up on that soapbox. osf.io/preprints/so...
How Conflict Aversion Can Enable Authoritarianism:An Evolutionary Dynamics ApproachChad M. TopazDecember 6, 2025AbstractWe use evolutionary game theory to examine how conflict-averse centrism can unintentionallyfacilitate authoritarian success in polarized political conflicts. Many such conflicts are asym-metric: authoritarian actors can employ norm-breaking or coercive tactics, while democraticresistance faces stronger constraints on what counts as normatively acceptable behavior. Yetformal models typically treat opposing sides symmetrically and rarely examine conflict-aversebehavior. Drawing on empirical research on protest backlash, civility norms, and authoritarianresilience, we model these dynamics as a three-strategy evolutionary game in which resistance, authoritarianism, and conflict-averse centrism interact under replicator dynamics. This frame-work yields two distinct outcomes—cyclic resurgence of authoritarian strength through a hete-roclinic cycle and a stable centrist–authoritarian coalition that excludes resistance—dependingon how actors respond to confrontation. The analysis shows how payoff differences can reor-ganize long-run dynamics in asymmetric conflicts. Our contribution is to demonstrate how anestablished dynamical framework, combined with empirically grounded behavioral assumptions, clarifies the strategic conditions under which conflict aversion can diminish the effectiveness ofdemocratic resistance.

Academic freedom is applicable to anyone with a teaching role. You can’t ask graduate students to teach, advise students, and evaluate student work with granting them academic freedom. The recent debacle at OU and a previous one in the School of Social Work at UT Austin illustrate this.

Published in #MNRAS: "Redefining interiors and envelopes: hydrogen–silicate miscibility and its consequences for the structure and evolution of sub-Neptunes", Rogers et al. This is Fig. 2: for the caption & to read the paper please visit academic.oup.com/mnras/articl...
A schematic for the interior structure of sub-Neptunes. Moving radially outwards from the planetary centre: the ‘interior’ is defined as the region interior to the binodal surface. At the binodal, a phase change occurs as the convective, miscible, hydrogen–silicate fluid speciates into gas and melt phases. The region above the binodal is defined as the ‘envelope’. The silicate vapour introduces a mean molecular weight gradient, which can inhibit convection. In this case, heat is transported via conduction and radiative diffusion. Silicate-rich melt droplets rain-out to rejoin the interior. Continuing to move radially outwards, the envelope becomes unstable to convection and the gas become progressively more hydrogen-rich. The very upper region of the envelope is almost pure hydrogen gas, and heat is transported by radiative diffusion. Radiative-convective boundaries (RCBs) are shown as white dashed lines.

Eleven years ago, I wrote to Tom Stoppard to ask about this coup de théâtre from 1949. It took me down an unexpected rabbit hole - in memory of Stoppard, here's what I found.
"Years and years ago, there was a production of The Tempest, out of doors, at an Oxford college on a lawn, which was the stage, and the lawn went back towards the lake in the grounds of the college, and the play began in natural light. But as it developed, and as it became time for Ariel to say his farewell to the world of The Tempest, the evening had started to close in and there was some artificial lighting coming on. And as Ariel uttered his last speech, he turned and he ran across the grass, and he got to the edge of the lake and he just kept running across the top of the water — the producer having thoughtfully provided a kind of walkway an inch beneath the water. And you could see and you could hear the plish, plash as he ran away from you across the top of the lake, until the gloom enveloped him and he disappeared from your view.
And as he did so, from the further shore, a firework rocket was ignited, and it went whoosh into the air, and high up there it burst into lots of sparks, and all the sparks went out, and he had gone.

"When you look up the stage directions, it says, 'Exit Ariel.”

Bottom left is an edge-on perspective of the same pair. Upper right is a graph showing the edge-on speed of the star (which follows a sinusoidal curve). Bottom right is a depiction of the star's spectrum, showing dark absorption lines which move due to the doppler effect (which is how the edge-on speed of the star is determined).

People learn through practice and challenge; not by receiving answers. But a deeper problem is that an essential aspect of teaching is helping someone organize their thinking in new ways. LLMs — systems which cannot think or appreciate thinking — are incapable of doing this in a meaningful way.

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick. Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
