11. One More Thing Before I Die
I talk about who I am as though I have absolutely no regrets. While it is true that I am happy to be Kindred, and I ultimately would never wish to be human again, unlife is not without its tragedies. I miss the sun, I miss the feeling of excitement when my flesh touches the flesh of another. I miss the days when animals used to come up to me excited for pets and headpats; now they all avoid me and run away if they sense me. I miss sexual intimacy, as now my parts more or less simply exist as tools of disguise.
When I died, I didn't know that was going to be my last night as a mortal. I didn't know what I was giving up from one instance to another. So if I could've had one more thing before I died... I suppose it would have been to see my family again. Nowadays I don't know if my parents had any more children, or if my siblings ever had family, but I do know that they are all dead now, and I never got to say goodbye. They more than likely presume I died in the war, and grieved me when enough years went by that I was never found. I don't think of them much anymore, and I'm not nostalgic of my mortality, but that doesn't mean I don't have any regrets. That is probably my greatest.

10. Awakened #MonthOfDarkness
To be a Kindred, means that you were once a mortal. A human. Then you died. And then you were awakened by a Kindred, to be a Kindred yourself. Usually, that means your sire is also, by extension, your murderer.

I only met my sire on the day that I died. I was a spy for the Soviets against the Nazis. I was successful at seducing officers, getting them vulnerable, and then getting information out of them, and then killing them. I had done this eight times until finally, I fucked up. I don't know how, but they knew who I was, and they lured me into a trap. I managed to escape into the woods but not before suffering a mortal wound. I leaned against a tree in the forest and waited to bleed out.
Then, a man appeared in the woods. He told me that he was familiar with what I did, and admired my fight against the fascists. He liked who I was, and offered to save me. He told me he would give me life eternal, in exchange for an endless hunger, and being part of a new world, one with its own problems, but different than the one I lived in now. I thought he was just an overzealous Christian, and at that time, I was ready to do or say anything to not die.
So he cut my throat, and I felt all the life drain out of me. Everything went black. I was dead. I felt myself cease to be, and for a moment, it was like it was before I was born. But then, light returned to my eyes, and an overwhelming coppery smell stabbed my senses directly between my eyes. I could taste something. I was drinking, deeply. And then I came to. Awakened. And I was drinking the blood from this man's arm. He pulled me off, and... well, I guess the rest is history, as they say.
I don't regret my decision. I love being what I am.
But I don't think I would have accepted his offer, if I knew what I was going to become.
Then again... I was desperate. Desperation is not a feeling I am without. That one is universal to both the living and the dead.

9. The First Betrayal
Every Kindred will lose control eventually. It's our curse. We are, at the end of the day, slaves to our beast. And the beast is going to get what it wants sooner or later.
At one point in time, I was also a slave to the Camarilla. It's what I was brought up into. I upheld the Masquerade for more than ten years, until at one point, the beast overcame me, and I did what always happens when the beast comes out. I devoured those around me.
I endangered the Masquerade with my actions, so I did what many Kindred would have done in that situation. I left as fast as I could, and consulted my sire for advice.
In a moment of vulnerability, where I needed help and guidance, my sire instead brought me before the Sheriff. The fucking Sheriff. A Neonate guilty of breaking the most important Tradition I may have been, but it was the tradition that everyone had broken at least once. The Sheriff told me that he was going to give me final death at first, but then decided not to. He instead kept me alive to earn a favor from me.
I did what I had to do, but the only thing on my mind was the feeling of betrayal. My own sire, a fucking Brujah at that, willing to betray me for the law, and the law of aristocratic bullshit that was the Camarilla.
I had learned before never to trust Kindred. Deceptive creatures. Greedy things. I had dealt with the lies of Kindred before, but this... this was new. Many in the Camarilla would say that this should have been a teaching moment, to teach me that I should trust no one. But what it actually taught me is to never trust the Camarilla. That was the first betrayal that mattered. It was also the last one I didn't see coming.

8. No One Will Believe You #MonthOfDarkness
Down in the back alleys of the city at night, I could hear the distinctive sound of violence. What was either a mugging or a hate crime, I could not be sure, but it didn't matter to me. I just know the sound of a good meal when I hear it.
As I arrived, I saw that it was, in fact two men assaulting a man who was undoubtedly just trying to walk home after a night out at the bar. From the context of the apparel and the attitudes being shown through this violence, it seemed that these assailants were stupid drunk conservatives, and the man they were attacking, was queer. So a hate crime then. This excited me, because of the blood of the hateful was always a satisfying meal, especially when it was filled with rage.
So I interrupted their little beating, and threw the two men against the brick walls of the buildings in the alley. I sank my fangs into the first man that I could, while the other struggled to get to his feet. The blood tasted so good, I had to get seconds. Once I was done with the first, I lifted the other into the air, held him off his feet, and drank from his throat in such an angle that his blood flowed directly straight down into my mouth. Like drinking directly from the tap. I didn't kill either of them, but they were both going to have a hard time walking tomorrow, and neither of them would remember what happened.
I licked my lips, and prepared to leave, when I heard a whimpering "thank you," come from the victim of my two meals.
I stopped in my tracks and looked back at him. "You're welcome, dear fellow."
He stammered and stuttered, struggling to speak to me. "Are you some kind of a Vampire?"
"I'm just an alcoholic hallucination, guy." I answered, straightening out my coat. "And you beat the shit out of these dudes, let me tell you."
"How do you know I won't tell anyone what really happened here?"
I smiled and turned to him, let him look into the depths of my soulless eyes. "Because no one will believe you."
With that, I left the drunk behind.

7. What Keeps You Here?
I have existed on this Earth for 108 years. And in that time I never considered wanting to die, which may be surprising to some. I have talked to older mortals, middle-aged or the elderly, and they have expressed at times being content with their lives, and being at peace with the possibility of dying tomorrow. I've talked to young adult mortals who have simple life goals for the next decade, and their retirement plan is to simply kill themselves when they reach the age of fifty. I could never relate to them. I've also talked to other Kindred who feel like their existence is such a waste, and if it wasn't for their duty to the cause, or maybe to Cain's cause, they would have ended it long ago. Them I especially do not understand.
For those who were content to die in the present, I felt satisfied enough to drain them. If they are so unconcerned with their future, they might as well provide their life force to myself, one who still does. Because I'm not done being alive. I will probably never want to die.
One could say that I am living to accomplish my goals, and I do have goals which I strive towards. I want to live to see the end of the Masquerade, or at least the perceived need to have it in the first place. I want to see the Camarilla fall. These are things I fight for as often as I can. But that's why I am still here.
In all honesty, I'm here for me. I enjoy being what I have become. I like to hunt my prey in the night. I like roaming the streets looking for my next meal. I enjoy the powers that I have, and I like that I will never age. Maybe I'll feel different about this in a few centuries from now. But as for me, I have no reason to go anywhere. I live as surely as the dead rest. I'll never stop until someone else stops me.

6. A Dream Worth Dying For #MonthOfDarkness
"If a man has not discovered something he will die for, he isn't fit to live." Those words were spoken a man, a great man who did, in fact, die for something. He is revered for the stand that he took, and history respects him.
Sometimes I wonder if these words, or any of his words, apply to those like me. Those who are already dead. Long dead in my case. But I suppose they do.
I dream of a world where Kindred can exist unashamed of who they are, and live as the creatures of the night that they deserve to be. To achieve this dream, we will need to fight, and that fight will not be easy. Not only that, but it is very much a fight against all the odds, and it is therefore likely to kill me.
But these are dreams of the undead... I can't help but realize that when that great mortal man spoke these powerful immortal words, he wasn't intending them to be for someone like myself. Especially since my dream would likely conflict with his. Maybe I'm wrong about that, and he would be in support of a renewing of Enoch from the Ancient Days. But in my experience, humans are appreciative of The Masquerade, if only for the fact that they don't realize they are being hunted every single day by the likes of us. Some mortals know and are fine with this. But for every mortal who longs to have their blood drank, there are five mortals who wish to destroy us instead.
If predator and prey cannot reconcile their differences, then conflict is inevitable. But it is not them that i worry about. It is those who stand in the way of our freedom that are, ironically, on our side. Other Kindred. And they are a lot harder to fight. It is my fellow Kindred who would keep me from my freedom, and my freedom is worth dying for. So I will continue to fight.
Mortals will never truly understand our conflict because to a lot of them, being fed on is repulsive.
I can't say I blame them... I just don't care. Why would I?

5. Reality is Negotiable #MonthOfDarkness
There is no set, determined, absolute reality. Any mortal who believes in ghosts is only half right about these things. And even those of us who live among the dead don't really know what it means to die.
There is a Malkavian in my Coterie. It only took a few nights of spending time with her that I came to understand that my perception of reality and hers were entirely different. It would be easy to deride her as a mere lunatic, but I never bought that about Malks, and neither should anyone else. It would be naive to entirely dismiss their perception of the world, especially when it sometimes makes more sense than ours.
There is also a Lasombra in my Coterie. I used to think that their ability to travel from one shadow to another was as simple as that, but when she told me that her movement is less a hop from one place to another, and it involved going to another world entirely, I didn't question it. She had no reason to lie to me, and frankly I have no reason not to believe her.
In my experience, insistence that we know how the world works, and planting our feet firmly in the ground, holding our stance as an unwavering opinion that will not be shaken, is just a good way to get run over by the unexpected truth.
These Hunters and their true faith... I don't know if there is a God, or Gods, or holy figures, but some Hunters do. And that alone gives them inexplicable power over us Kindred. We don't know how it works, and I don't think they do either. Faith, even that powerful, is fickle, and it can be lost just as easily as it can be achieved. I don't know what to make of that.
The only thing I can be sure of is my own experiences, and that there is more that I do not know. Not even the Mages know everything, and sometimes I feel like the Tremere know even less. Our reality is what we make of it, I guess. Our disciplines, our magic, or whatever you want to call it, that's us negotiating with reality, trying to cut out of it for ourselves what we would have.

4. A Song of Rage #MonthOfDarkness
My blood is Brujah. And as such, I am uniquely unable to control my rage. That's a problem, because there's a lot of things that make me angry.
Back when I knew my sire, I would watch him sing a song as he walked away from situations that would put him way in over his head. I asked him why one night, and he told me that it was the only thing that would help him calm down. And being calm was an important part of being a Brujah.
I remember the melody, but I don't remember the words. Sometimes he didn't sing any words anyways. Sometimes just humming the tune was enough to hold him back apparently.
The first time he sang those words was when we were leaving Elysium after meeting the Prince for the first time. The Prince told him that he was only allowed to embrace me because he thought it would be good for him to put his energy into something else other than the affairs of the Court. That while I was to be trained as fledgling, a responsibility the Prince knew my Sire would not neglect, there would be less opportunity for my Sire to fuck everything up. My Sire grinned, bowed, and walked out with me. While he did, he was singing softly to himself. At the time, I didn't ask why. Now that I know, I realize that that song was probably the only thing that stopped him from attempting to assassinate the Prince right there on the spot.
I don't think he would have succeeded. But part of me wishes that he tried.
The last time I heard that song was when I left. He knew he couldn't touch me, either because of my friends, or his emotional attachment to me. But he wanted to. His beast wanted him to. So instead of an elder's fists, the last thing I remember about him, was his song.
It haunts me that I don't remember the words. I could simply use a song like that in my life. Because I am brought to my limit every night. And some time, my rage will bring me to commit the last mistake I ever make.

3. The Monster You Love #MonthOfDarkness
I remember when I first saw her. My eyes were still adjusting to this new kind of vision, where I no longer saw people walking around as individuals, but as potential meals or potential allies, or potential enemies. But I remember what I thought when I first saw her. That she was beautiful. She was confident, monstrous, and terrifying.
She was leaning against a wall, one black boot raised and pressed back against the surface, she had on an oversized black shirt that extended nearly down to her knees, concealing most of her black shorts that had loose threads swinging in the breeze. Her shirt was loosely spray painted with white paint that read 'Fuck the Cam.'
When she turned to look at me, she started at my feet, and then I watched her eyes size me up until she looked directly into my pupils. She scoffed and then looked away, as though she had other bigger important things to do than to look at me. Then she asked me, "New to bloodsucking then, little Cainite?"
"Just a few days," I answered.
"How do you like it?" and just as I was about to answer, she continued. "And don't give me any of that bullshit about how ethical it is. Just tell me how you like it."
I paused, and gave my honest answer. "It feels like this is what I was made for... I love it."
"So then don't be so fuckin' scared." She turned to stare at me. Her eyes reflected golden in the moonlight. "You were made for this. It's okay to be the monster you are. Just don't let it fuck with your judgement, and you'll be alright."

Those words were the most honest things I had ever heard from a Kindred. From before and ever since. Since then, I have seen her commit unspeakable atrocities in the night. She has drained the living of their blood in front of their families and made them clean up the mess. She keeps fresh victims in her basement, and drinks from them when she is too lazy to hunt, often forgetting about them until it's too late.

She's nothing short of a monster.
She's my mentor.
And I love her.

2. Feast of the Damned #MonthOfDarkness
I could smell him before I heard him. Blood from an open wound. An injury of broken bone, not serious enough to bleed him out, but bad enough for the pain to be overwhelming. I could smell it on the night air, and I let it carry me to him.
At the bottom of a small cliff was a man yelling for help. He had evidently rode his bike a little too recklessly on this unlit street in the middle of the night. Not exactly a busy area so far outside the city, and I could hear it in his screams, that he thought he was going to die there.
I answer his calls, and make my way down the hill.
"Hey! Hey! I see you! Hey, please! Please can you help me outta here!? I can't move! I need an ambulance!"

In another life, I would have done everything I could to help this poor man. I was compassionate like that. I would take the time to pull him out of where he was stuck. I would have torn my shirt to use as a bandage and a tourniquet for the wound. I would have driven him to the hospital myself. I might have called friends or the fire department to help get this man what he needs.

But that was decades ago. And unfortunately for this poor mortal, I was hungry, and no other Kindred had claims to this domain.

I watched as the relief on his face when he saw me change to absolute horror. I must have looked like an animal. I know I felt like one when I saw the blood. His pleas for help, turned into pleas for me to get away, but those didn't last either. I sank my fangs into his flesh, and drank deeply. Every last drop.

He was not a man in distress. He was a meal for the damned like me.
When they find his body, they'll simply say he bled out at the bottom of the bridge while no one heard his cries. It would be a tragic accident.
Opportunities like that don't come often. I was fortunate to be able to feed so well and so easily.

When I first became this thing that I am, I would have regretted my actions just then.
That was back when I thought I was redeemable.
I know better now.

1. The World You Left Behind
The causes I fought for in my mortal life were all important to me, sure. I fought for the liberation of my people. I fought for the end of senseless violence, the rise of autocrats, and for a future where people could be free. It was all important. I guess it still is.

But it's not the same anymore.

When the sun goes down, I get to work on my new fight. Likely one that I will be fighting for the rest of my unlife, and it isn't too dissimilar to what I was fighting for before. It's still freedom. Not from the Nazis who occupied my home country eighty years ago, but from the Camarilla who oppresses me now. And sometimes it feels like my existence has just been one of constant struggle, whether I was mortal at some point or not.

And yet, when I look back on who I was, and the fight I stood for, I can't help but feel that I, and those around me, were something as children, playing a game we couldn't comprehend, with stakes we didn't want to think about, against odds we refused to consider. But now, such things in my current conflict are all that's on my mind.

Mortals walk around me now, on their way back from a late night at the bar, and they have no idea that I am waiting for them, a predator in the dark.
I see my victim, and I plunge my fangs into their throat before they even have a chance to react. And I can taste their past. This one is a college student, majoring in political science. They were recently reading Marx, and their thesis intends to be one of drawing comparisons between his ideas of Communism, and that of the Anarchists who criticized him.
They taste so ambitious.
And in them, I can taste my past.
This world resents someone like them, but I love them, for what it's worth. They remind me of me.
But my cause is changed.
For the freedom I fight for is not for mortals.
But for us Kindred.
And our right to feed on mortals like this as much as we choose.
Does this make me an enemy of the causes I once fought for?
