A narrow, winding gorge lies between towering layers of gray stone topped with green foliage. A stone trail runs along the left side, leading to a small stone bridge. Beneath the bridge, a small stream flows through, becoming a thin waterfall that cascades into a pool below. Another waterfall plunges from the top of the left cliff, falling like a veil or a curtain beside the stone trail.

A dragonfly perches at the end of dead twig, against a uniform tan background. The thorax is blue-purple and the abdomen is bright pink. Both of those body sections are slightly pruinose (meaning like they look like they have a little white dust on them). The head is dominated by dark purple eyes. The wings are clear except for dark veins and dark pterostigmata (small colored areas near the wingtips).

One of the most astonishing behaviors exhibited by whales is the upright sleeping posture of sperm whales (*Physeter macrocephalus*): they stand vertically in the water in groups—resembling candles—to rest for 10 to 15 minutes. It is a majestic sight.

The base of Lucifer Falls at Robert H. Treman State Park. Long before the park carried Treman’s name, this gorge was known as Enfield Glen. Robert H. Treman was an Ithaca businessman, banker, Cornell trustee, and one of the early leaders in preserving the Finger Lakes’ gorge parks.
