Swimming area at Robert H. Treman State Park. It is part swimming hole, part old-school park pool, and part waterfall stop. Definitely one of the more memorable summer spots in the Finger Lakes.

Dunkirk Lighthouse at Point Gratiot on Lake Erie. This year marks 200 years since the light station was established here in 1826. The current lighthouse and keeper’s residence came later, in 1875–76, replacing the original tower after erosion threatened the bluff.

Rainbow Falls at Watkins Glen State Park. Most people photograph this section looking up the gorge, and for good reason — it is one of the classic Watkins Glen views. But next time you visit, try starting at the top and looking downstream instead. It gives the gorge a completely different feel.

Charlotte Pier at Ontario Beach Park in Rochester. Some sunsets make the whole lake feel quiet, even when there are people all around. I love this kind of scene: a couple silhouettes, the sun dropping into Lake Ontario, and that big orange sky doing all the work.

“Sgoh-sa-is-thah” — roughly, “smashing water against rock.” You understand why the Iroquois gave this section of Irondequoit Creek that name when you visit and listen for the low rumble of the water drumming over the rocks.

Shale layers at Watkins Glen. These rock layers date back to the Devonian Period, hundreds of millions of years before dinosaurs. At the time, much of what is now New York was covered by a shallow inland sea. The animals here would not have been deer, amphibians, or birds.

Upper Falls at Letchworth State Park, photographed in 2014 with the old Portageville Bridge still standing above the gorge. For generations, this steel railroad bridge was part of the classic Letchworth view.

Today's the day. Plan a dinner picnic at the lake. Even if you just pick up some takeout on the way there. Seneca Lake from Clute Memorial Park in Watkins Glen. The park’s name connects back to Warren W.

Stony Brook State Park The Gorge Trail at Stony Brook State Park is currently closed after flood damage took out portions of the trail, and repairs will take time. It is disappointing, especially because this is one of the most beautiful gorge walks in New York, but there may be a silver lining.

More for the Chautauqua Lake fans: Midway State Park. Midway began in 1898 as a trolley park, one of those old lakeside amusement areas built to give people a reason to ride the trolley out for the day.

Bucktail Falls in Spafford, NY. Hidden in plain sight in Central New York. The first time i visited i swear I drove past it 3-4 times and couldn't find it. It's only a short walk from the road.

The Chautauqua Belle in Mayville, NY The Belle looks like it has been traversing the lake for over a century, but was actually constructed in Mayville in the 1970s as a tribute to the old steamboat era.

This is so cool The Stow Ferry at Bemus Point on Chautauqua Lake. A ferry has been crossing here since 1811, carrying people between Bemus Point and Stow at one of the narrowest points on the lake. Long before the nearby bridge made the trip quick and easy, this was the way across.

The base of Lucifer Falls at Robert H. Treman State Park. Long before the park carried Treman’s name, this gorge was known as Enfield Glen. Robert H. Treman was an Ithaca businessman, banker, Cornell trustee, and one of the early leaders in preserving the Finger Lakes’ gorge parks.

I miss the charm of the old diesel Maid of the Mist boats. The new electric boats are cleaner and quieter, which is a good thing. But there was something about the older boats. The sound, the vibration, the shape, and the way they looked pushing through the mist below Niagara Falls.

Lake Ontario at Barker, NY. One of my favorite simple road trips is just following the lake and seeing what I can find. No big itinerary, no rush. Just town and state parks, beaches, piers, old shoreline roads, and little views that are easy to miss if you are only heading to the obvious places.

My knees ache just looking at this photo. These are the stairs leading up alongside Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca, where the Gorge Trail climbs from the base of the main waterfall into the upper gorge. Approximate number of steps on the trail? 600ish

Sunset over Lake Ontario at the Charlotte Pier, Rochester NY Ontario Beach Park is one of those Rochester places that almost everyone seems to have a memory tied to: walking the pier, watching the waves, riding the carousel, getting ice cream, or just standing by the lake as the sky changes.

Pratts Falls in summer, framed by all that green. It feels like a quiet woodland waterfall now, but this place has been tied to local history for a long time.

Postcards from a Finger Lakes souvenir pack. c.1930s These cards were printed on textured paper that gave them a fabric-like look, with color added through the printing process rather than painted by hand one at a time. That is part of their charm.

A few moments of peace on Lake Ontario. Sunset at Chimney Bluffs State Park, where the shoreline feels a little wild, a little strange, and completely different from anywhere else in New York.

Rochester from Cobb’s Hill Park. This is one of those views that makes the city feel both familiar and a little different. The skyline is right there, but from this overlook you also get the trees, the distance, the sky, and the sense of how green Rochester really is.

Stony Brook State Park has some of the best “built into the gorge” trail work in New York. This view looks across one of the waterfalls, with the old stone stairway tucked into the opposite wall.

This is one of my favorite views in Corbett’s Glen. The photo is looking downstream from the first waterfall and tunnel toward the second waterfall, where Allens Creek spreads out over the rock before dropping again through the glen.

Sunrise at Letchworth State Park. The waterfalls get most of the attention, but early in the morning the whole gorge becomes the show. The Genesee River sits far below, fog collects in the valley, and the cliffs slowly catch the first light of the day.

A big thank you to the people who help keep NYFalls.com running. NYFalls.com is now in its 20th year, and it remains the largest free guide to New York’s waterfalls and lakes. The site takes a lot of time, travel, research, hosting, mapping, photography, and ongoing maintenance to keep going.

Lover’s Leap in Ithaca has one of those names that sounds like it should come with an old romantic legend. In this case, the name is a little more literal. The falls are near a cliff along Fall Creek where people have been known to jump into the water below.

Here are a few more photos from a Revolutionary War weekend at Old Fort Niagara. It is one of my favorite events to photograph: uniforms, tents, smoke, music, camp life, and the French Castle sitting above Lake Ontario. The setting does so much of the work.

My favorite time to visit Old Fort Niagara is during a large living-history event. This year, the fort is hosting the August 1–2 America 250 Celebration, with a Revolutionary War encampment, demonstrations, music, and interpreters bringing the site’s 18th-century history to life.

Watkins Glen is one of those places I never get tired of photographing. This view looks toward Minnehaha Falls and Cavern Cascade, one of the most recognizable sections of the lower gorge.

The French Castle at Old Fort Niagara today and over 100 years ago. Built by the French in 1726, it is one of the oldest buildings in the Great Lakes region and has stood at the mouth of the Niagara River through French, British, and American control of the fort.

The upper part of Buttermilk Falls (Ithaca, NY) Buttermilk Creek loses about 600 feet as it cuts down the hillside toward Cayuga Valley, which is why the park feels like a continuous sequence of waterfalls, cascades, ledges, pools, and slides. This upper section shows that gradient really well.

The new Sentry Bridge at Watkins Glen State Park has sparked a lot of opinions. Some people are glad to see the entrance reopened and safer for the future. Others feel the modern design changes the classic stonework character of the gorge.

This waterfall is tucked inside Cayuga Shores Wildlife Management Area, on the east side of Cayuga Lake. Until recently, this place was known as Bell Station Preserve. Before that, it had a very different possible future: the land had been acquired for a nuclear power plant that was never built.

Big update that was months in the making: I recently added 300+ waterfalls across New York State. These new listings span most counties and every major region of the state, including New York City, making this the most comprehensive statewide waterfall listing out there.

Seneca Mills Falls is one of those places where the waterfall is only half the story. Today, it is one of the most scenic stops along the Keuka Outlet Trail. But long before this was a hiking and biking route, the rushing water here helped power one of the earliest mill sites in Yates County.

High Falls is already one of Rochester’s most unusual natural landmarks: a major waterfall in the middle of downtown, surrounded by bridges, old industrial buildings, power infrastructure, and city streets.

Not every Fourth of July memory has to be loud. Sometimes it is a dock, a breeze off the lake, boats in the distance, and that blue-green Finger Lakes water doing all the work. This is Skaneateles Lake, one of the clearest and most beautiful lakes in New York.

Corbett’s Glen has one of the best entrances of any small park near Rochester. You leave the road, walk through the old stone railroad tunnel, and suddenly Allens Creek, mossy rock, falling water, and forest are all around you.

Not every waterfall at Fillmore Glen is on the main Gorge Trail. This one is on the quieter east side of the park, downstream from the dam, tucked onto a small loop off the North Rim Trail.

Would you guess there are old mines beneath this waterfall? This is Upper Akron Falls in Akron, NY. The village was once nicknamed “Cement City,” thanks to the cement and gypsum industries that helped shape the local economy for more than 100 years.

Did you know Kaaterskill Falls once had a hotel sitting right above it? This restored 1902 photo shows the old Laurel House overlooking the falls. It started as a boarding house in the 1850s and later grew into a major Catskills resort.

Watkins Glen State Park- Why do you think they called this Pluto Falls? The name likely comes from Pluto / Plouton, the underworld figure from Greek and Roman mythology. And honestly, it fits. This part of Watkins Glen feels darker, colder, and more hidden than almost anywhere else in the gorge.
