We are fortunate to have wonderful customers say lovely things about us on a regular basis, but most of our customers are not currently an Assembly Member or a Mayor-Elect, so this proclamation we received today from @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social is really special.
A fancy framed gold embossed letter with a seal that reads:
Whereas, Astoria Bookshop has served New Yorkers since its original location's grand opening in 2013; and
Whereas, Astoria Bookshop is a small business that each day showcases the achievements of both the Queer Community and women entrepreneurs within our neighborhood and great City; and
Whereas, Astoria Bookshop enriches the vibrancy of our community through offering a wealth of books frequently not found elsewhere including books on Astoria and Queens, Indigenous peoples and First Nations, banned books, and books written by LGBTQIA+ authors; and
Whereas, Astoria Bookshop has encouraged community gathering and togetherness, hosting events for all Astorians to enjoy, including book clubs, Sunday storytime, and storytelling shows; and
Whereas Astoria Bookshop has dedicated itself to community advocacy, striving to provide dignity for all New Yorkers; and
Whereas, Astoria Bookshop dedicates considerable space and resources to uplift, promote, and sell the work of Queens-based authors, ensuring that words written in Queens can reach readers across the world, and
Whereas, Astoria Bookshop has continued to open its doors despite periods of hardship, with its owners seeking innovative solutions during the COVID-19 pandemic to keep Astorians safe, employed, and well-read: now, therefore, be it
Proclaimed, that I, Assemblymember Mamdani, honor Astoria Bookshop for its service to Astorians and the 36th Assembly District.

Fantastic event @astoriabookshop.bsky.social for the launch of Lindsay Stuart Hill’s world of dew with readings from @emilyhockaday.bsky.social. Two of my favorites so far when going through the books… it’s January still by LSH and River Clay by EH.
Covers of world of dew by Lindsay Stuart hill and in a body by Emily Hockaday. The former depicts a forest or a swamp, surreal and dreamlike with evening light. The latter depicts a the head of a woman with perhaps carrot flowers growing out of her face. It's January. Still.
But on the plus side, as I walked down my block after the blizzard, I saw a woman with wine-dark dreadlocks, and from her pocket there was singing, and she was singing along, don't worry, baby
to her car, of all things, as she swept armfuls of snow from it, a VW bug with headlight eyes, windshield wiper antennae sticking straight up, and I walked on overcome into the cloudless blue morning. Don't worry, baby.
I had walked out my door, phone in hand, with a head full of news: 1,300 people dying a day, vaccine mandates in stalemate, new laws contrived to erase our history.
But now, this sky meadow. My thoughts stunned, cowed and sheepish in pure air.
Oh literal glitter, sparkling specks of snow dust upswept like bird murmurations, apart, together, dispersed, space-entered, oh God. On the plus side, there she was: music overflowing from her pockets, her throat, as if we were buried in nothing but sunlight and snowfall and she could just brush it all off with her mittens.River Clay
Being back here, I'm reminded what I'm made of. The wet shore of Hockanum River is red and thick.
I know the slimy feel of clay between my fingers and under my nails.
A muskrat glides through the water;
I think about my own clay limbs—the stiffness each morning, how you call and call my name with your little voice,
but I still can't get them to move.

A Golden-filigree framed image with a grey-green misty background with the book centered. The book cover features a teal background with a central haunted house (typical Gothic, mansard roof, eerily lit interior, surrounded by encroaching mist and overgrowing forest.) The text is in white script and the subtitle in a rich goldenrod yellow that mirrors the filigree detailing and quatrefoil corner pieces of gothic detailing around the edges.

The quote from Publishers Weekly reads: "[A] spine-tingling investigation of ghostly mayhem and gory deeds. It's a satisfuing combination of well-sourced fact-checking, thoughtful literary analysis, and creepy chills."

Andrea and Leanna are also the co-authors of A HAUNTED HISTORY OF INVISIBLE WOMEN: TRUE STORIES OF AMERICA'S GHOSTS which was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in Non-Fiction
