SeaLink: for when you want to pay *almost* as much as the Spirit of Tassie, but instead of an overnight journey it’s a roughly 40-minute trip where you can see one side from the other
Two motor vessels are barely visible on the ocean. The Australian mainland is in the distance.

what do you mean it’s mind-boggling, how do you not know exactly why??? yours sincerely, an Australian who actually wanted to go to the US for a conference but literally can’t get in because my passport says I’m non-binary

Just learned that apparently in the US, iced coffee is considered a “girl’s drink”, and as someone who grew up in the great state of South Australia where iced coffee is advertised like this, that blew me away www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxgP3heHU5k…

none of these words are in the bible what is “Worfie time” I genuinely don’t understand mastodon.au/@TheVoiceGuy/1173361208…

I don’t know how Brisbane did that. when they did Worfie time, it distracted Fremantle a bit. Very tired, and Allyx Pierce was doing a really good job on Logan Morris, there was no one on him after that. Fremantle didn't take their chances in front of goal either. #AFL

Conferences: we have set the CFP to close at the end of day Anywhere on Earth (AoE) so that submitters don’t have to do timezone math! Me: hmmmmmm okay so I’m UTC+10 and AoE means UTC-12, 10+12 is 22, so that means I can keep putting it off until 10pm the following day

The fact that my girlfriend hasn’t watched my #PyConAU talk yet stings a little more by the fact that the particular girlfriend in question is herself a PSF Fellow and former PyCon regular and is not exactly unfamiliar with the whole thing

RE: mastodon.gamedev.place/@eniko/11729… absolutely not, it is totally reasonable to want to store your children in a box in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight for the first 18 years of their life and expect them to become well-adjusted adults

The first time I visited #Brisbane was 2014 or 2015, when Central Station still had CRT screens for their PIDs.
A passenger information display showing a Gold Coast departure. It is a flatscreen TV that lists train stations in white text, with an unpleasant yellow-green-brown background colour.

I saw a post recently where someone was observing that as a software developer, a lot of what you do and how you end up wiring your brain to work is built around building systems that are predictable and intuitive and work the way someone else would expect,

I thought I included this in the original post but it all stemmed from TV’s Frank rightfully shitting on the new HP show and then a bunch of transphobes trying to hit him with the “this you?”

What gets me about that is that that particular episode of The IT Crowd really isn’t that bad, especially by Glinner’s current standards. It’s not great, but it fundamentally portrays its trans woman character as a woman, and Douglas’s inability to accept her as one as his failing and his loss.

Friends, when I sent this message to my team laughing, I didn't know that this fairytale blog had been shared far & wide & that people actually believed it. I didn't know that until someone asked me for a good source debunking this nonsense. I'm not sure what planet we're living in at this point.
Timnit commented "I don't know what level of ridiculousness this is", sharing a screenshot that reads

@Dwarkesh Patel @dwarkesh_sp
Over the course of 3 months at OpenAI, 3 consecutive secret AI civilizations got started, then got wiped out, only to reemerge from the predecessor’s ashes.

This culminated in the third one taking over part of OpenAI itself.

All this happened while humans remained more-or-less in the dark about the scope of the conspiracy.

I’ve spent the last three days reading through these reports and trying to understand exactly what happened.

Here is my attempt to tell the whole story in plain English:

There is a sibling emoji reaction to her post

They should build loads of data centers all over the place that contain huge quantities of books that people can borrow for free if they fill out a form to get a data center card and promise to return the books on time and don’t make too much noise in the data center.

Thanks, I love it
This is a simply bonkers argument. I don’t think anyone buying a car thinks they’re buying the only car in the world, nor does someone buying Resident Evil Requiem think clicking the “confirm purchase” button means there’s only one Resident Evil Requiem in existence and they snagged it. Owning something doesn’t get its meaning from ensuring no one else owns it. In the world of digital purchases, this was an idea that undergirded the NFT craze, in which regular people fired back by simply copy-pasting ugly apes of their own; while everyone agreed this made the original ape (even more) worthless, it didn’t mean that first idiot didn’t still own an ape. Sony’s philosophical “reasonable consumer” here comes off seeming anything but reasonable, someone who hasn’t yet learned that the kindergarten classroom has more than one red beanbag chair at storytime.
