The pitch to parents of anyone born 2015 onwards: "We don't care whether your kids get the chance to go to university & we're going to punish them if they can't get a job in a knowledge & service-based economy we're doing nothing to fundamentally change."

If no one in government, opposition, or the media cares to cover this meaningfully we'll sleepwalk to the past. Universities will shrink, many will close, & it will become a class-based privilege again. For all the talk of NEETs, very few are reckoning w/ what this will mean for future generations

As others have rightly pointed out, best estimates are that around 30,000 jobs have been lost in the sector & it has barely elicited a shrug of the shoulders *from anyone*.

8 years into academia & it’s just one crushing disappointment after another. Closing in on my second big redundancy in 2 years. Not enough of the right kinds of experience to go after the jobs around my current level, not junior enough to be eligible for the research roles. What do you do?

Just a reminder as the new academic year kicks off - the UK government has deliberately, ruthlessly, throttled the recruitment of international students, solely to pander to racists, and the resultant 25%+ fall in numbers can and will only accelerate some universities into bankruptcy.

Whether it is wilful or not idk, but the Ghent letter makes it clear re Cofnas’ motivations. He’s saying it outright - he’s out to get people he deems unworthy. Unis are collections of people; why should 1 person be protected if he’s out to get his colleagues or students?

Andrew Snow @asnoweplan87.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
I think it is significant for a debate that is unlikely to happen but much needed - what are Unis for? If they’re democratic *at all* then the likes of Cofnas - going around waging crusades against people he deems unworthy - are rightly going to be excluded from all of them.
001
Andrew Snow @asnoweplan87.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Cofnas identifies *himself* as a ‘threat’ to students & staff! If we want Universities to be ‘open’ you can’t have people inside them who are actively & openly working to exclude people from them based on perceived biological differences!

The usual coterie signing up here. Ghent letter of suspension addresses the last point re “significant harm”. Recalls what @jemgilbert.bsky.social & Alan were discussing re a Uni’s purpose. If they’re democratic spaces then Cofnas behaviour & view’s unacceptable forbetterscience.com/wp-content/u...

Here is the full suspension letter from UGent that was sent to Nathan Cofnas, it shows ample reason for his suspension and potential termination. Including breach of contract, using the University of Ghent’s name and legitimacy to promote his racial supremacist views and causing reputational damage.

I found that story about him being obsessed with winning 5 a side & bossing the team about irritating as hell - meant to make him sound tough & only succeeded in making him sound like the last person you’d want to play with.

This story was instigated by a self professed racist, previously dismissed from Cambridge for expressing racist views. He has been able to furnish his reputation through the media, invited onto reputable platforms & described as “controversial” instead of racist.

Historically, University has been the preserve of the upper classes. Expansion is very recent. The more prestigious institutions still lack diversity in class & ethnicity, despite expansion. If we admit fewer students overall, & nothing changes, do you expect that trend to continue?

Andrew Snow @asnoweplan87.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Our vice chancellor states that he agrees w/ Andy Burnham re HE: “I have long argued that university is not the right choice for everyone” When people make claims like this they ought to be clear. Who are the people for whom university is not “the right choice”? How does this map onto race & class?

Running up to the end of your fixed term contract, desperately searching, applying, interviewing. Getting rejected, even for the small stuff. Swallowing the disappointment, the bitterness. Again & again & again & again. It sucks.

I've been thinking about this a lot - it makes you feel really lonely. My redundancy was barely acknowledged by colleagues - I'd worked there for 10 years across different positions. Like you say Kate, to now have relative uproar when FTCs are quietly shifted out - compounds that sense of isolation.

(2/) Some potential redundancies are apparently deserving of petitions and widespread horror on social media, and yet some certain redundancies are not at all - and yes, it's also, as colleagues have noted, clear that this applies to different institutions differently, but also apparently FTC staff

Also working-class autodidacts didn't just read alone - they read in groups, set up libraries and reading rooms, and battled for Mechanics' Institutes (many long ago merged into unis) to teach music, history, and politics. They built the public adult education infrastructure that's being destroyed

I make sense of it very simplistically: a particular type of politician discovered they could become rich & powerful by propping up a failing economic system & treating the populace like dupes. It’s worryingly cynical I’m afraid.
