I'm pleased to be quoted in Forbes today in R. Daniel Foster’s piece on the rise of occult-inspired Halloween décor. I contributed some thoughts on tarot’s visual language. Read it here: www.forbes.com/sites/rdanie... #Tarot #Halloween #Forbes #Design #Occult

Occult Halloween Decor Is Having A Moment
Consumers are buying tarot prints, potion bottles and spell books for Halloween, decor that's all about aesthetics.

What using tarot cards as random prompts has taught me about interviews
Finbarre Snarey spent years watching journalists experience the joylessness of rehearsed interviews and learned that a little bit of chance is all you need to find the real story

The September newsletter is here with a few thoughts about AI and writing, and all the reasons it's a bad idea. amyskaufman.substack.com/p/the-one-ag...
Christine de Pizan writing a book with a robot emoji on her head.People have spent decades being afraid of the singularity, but I actually think that what we have right now-unintelligent AI-is far more dangerous.LLMs encourage people to look outside themselves to figure out what they want to say, instead of looking inside. They encourage us, in essence, to be told what we think and feel.In our current always-online world, our creativity was one of the last inner spaces available to us. And creativity requires shutting out external distractions, all those flattening, homogenizing voices. It's the space that makes us individuals."

I don’t know what to tell you, man. I’m a medieval historian, and, in my field, if you don’t check your sources (and your sources’ sources) you are just asking to be taken for a ride by some bored 19th C. aristocratic English antiquarian with a penchant for inventing history.

I know I wrote a tragic book and all, but I don't know how they're doing such an utterly joyless Robin Hood, with no sense of humour. That's not medieval!
