Elden Ring is the most recent entry on this list but wow, I’ve never been so impressed with how much storytelling FromSoftware was able to pack into every nook and cranny of this massive map. I’ve always bounced off Soulslike games, but not Elden Ring. I devoured every inch of it. A true feast.

Star Wars Galaxies brought me joy when I was beyond broke, trying to make it in Hollywood as a 20 year old idiot. A subscription was the cheapest entertainment I could afford, and somehow it brought me riches in the form of lifelong friends and a husband. Pretty good investment!

Diablo II took over my entire life at one point, and I fondly remember sneaking into our local LAN cafe with my best friend after closing to play all night long (we were pals with the manager). The foundation of my lifelong love of ARPGs.

Unreal Tournament 2K3’s flak cannon is still one of the most satisfying guns to fire in gaming history. I was a pro esports player before that word even existed, signed to the Global Gaming League for a season. It led to my first job in games at PLAY Magazine!

Grim Fandango. Gosh, what an adventure game for the ages. I’d loved Sierra games and others like them, but Grim saw me and celebrated the Hispanic side of my heritage so beautifully. It also taught me the word “lugubrious.” A timeless classic.

Super Mario RPG isn’t the greatest Mario game, but it did something so different than every Mario game before it, and that was so exciting to me! I love when I see studios take risks with its IP, and SMRPG charmed the heck out of me as a tween.

Symphony of the Night remains the greatest Castlevania game ever made. I’ll never forget when I thought it was over and it had only just begun! Showed me the definition of the genre.

Psychonauts: Found me when I desperately needed it, and it was everything I’d wanted in a platformer. It was fun and funny, but it also had so much heart! Started my quest to work at Double Fine someday!

Okay so I will expand on each of these, for fun! FF7: I was 14 when I played it, and it absolutely floored me. Completely rewired my brain when it came to what I thought games were capable of, and I still get choked up when I hear Aerith’s theme.

Today I saw the new 4 hour documentary Musk, directed by Alex Gibney. There were too many times to count that a sold out theater burst out laughing at Elon Musk, something he said or did, even sometimes just how he looked. I believe that is his worst nightmare come to life.
