The previous joke was a Heimskringla reference, btw. Below is a rather elegant late 19th century edition (translated by Samuel Laing, 1889). Rather fine golden dragon ship too. The book is full of (often outlandish) stories about legendary and medieval Norwegian kings. #medievalsky

I dont think younger people realize just how massively popular and culturally significant the Lord of the Rings books were in the 1970s in the USA. Millenials experienced but a fraction of this when the Peter Jackson trilogy released.

On 21 September 1937: J.R.R. #Tolkien's The Hobbit was published. The book tells of a hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, and his journey with thirteen dwarves to recover their treasure from a dragon, Smaug. It's sold over 100 million copies and is one of the best-selling books of all time.

Been really enjoying my 89th anniversary re-read of Tolkien’s The Hobbit with a re-read of Douglas A. Anderson’s excellent The Annotated Hobbit which includes the only complete version of ‘The Quest for Erebor’ A great way to explore Bilbo’s adventure with the dwarves. #tolkien #hobbit

On 15 September 1977: J.R.R. #Tolkien's The Silmarillion was published. Edited by Christopher Tolkien, the book details the entire history of the world before The Hobbit, and goes into the legends that underpin the entire mythology including the creation of the world.
