Writing a good blurb is incredibly difficult.

Would anyone here be interested in being a beta-reader for a non-fiction book about asexuality? The target audience would be anyone that wants to learn everything possible about the orientation (e.g. educators, support workers, allies). (Approx. 200 pages.)

Did you know? Individuals with a persistently low interest in sex have been observed many mammal species, including rats, gerbils, rabbits, sheep, goats, cows, and rhesus monkeys While we shouldn't ascribe orientation to animals, such findings do debunk the idea #asexuality is 'unnatural'.

Did you know? Asexuality was mentioned in 1907 by US activist Carl Schlegel who said – “Let the same laws for all the intermediate stages of sexual life: the homosexuals, heterosexuals, bisexuals, asexuals, be legal as they are now in existence for the heterosexuals” #asexuality

Studies almost always find that asexual men are much less common than asexual women (sometimes at a ratio of 10:1!). Do you think this is a real effect, or just men facing greater barriers to identifying as ace? To me it seems like probably both.

I often hear from questioning people the most useful thing to see is a list of common ace experiences – so here is one such list. (Please use this with care. These experiences aren't universal and non-asexuals will relate to some of them.) 🧵(1/16) #asexuality

"I do not want to be thought of as 'unhealthy' or 'abnormal.' I am living in the way that is right for me." – Quote from a self-described asexual in a Dear Abby letter from 1981.

Did you know? The colour green was originally chosen for the aromanticism flag since it's the opposite of red on a colour wheel. (And red is the colour most commonly associated with romantic love.)
A flag consisting of 5 horizontal stripes, from top to bottom: green, light green, white, grey, black.

Scan from an 1976 article in an gay magazine which discusses asexuality in some depth [1]. It's interesting to see how the Asexual Manifesto has echoed through time up to the present day. #asexualhistory [1]: Turner, Greg (1976). Sexual identity. Gay Liberator, issue 48, 1976, p. 6.
A scan of a paragraph on a newspaper or magazine page. A title reads "SENSUALITY" under which there is one paragraph reading "As in the Asexual Manifesto, I knew that I liked, that I needed, physical contact with other humans. Since I took all sexual conotations out of this, I picked up on the concept of sensuality; simply enjoying physical pleasure in one's body."

I've once been told that the word 'allosexual' it is problematic because it lumps LGBT people together with straight people. If you find yourself thinking this please remember that the word 'human' exists.

Some people argue that asexuals should be excluded from LGBT+ spaces because they're straight-passing. They aren't. But even if they were, are you seriously suggesting it's fine for them to be forced into the closet their whole life?

The word 'monosexual' (originally meaning someone who only masturbates) was coined in 1869. By the same man who coined the terms 'homosexual' and 'heterosexual'. In the same year that he coined those terms. Asexuality is not new.

In Contrary Sexuality (1895) Emma Trosse argued that since the existence of "those who posses no sexual desire whatsoever" is natural, it cannot be immoral [1]. In fact, Trosse counted herself among this category, which she called "third gender" or "asensual". #asexualhistory

Did you know? In Magnus Hirschfeld's famous 1896 pamphlet "Sappho and Socrates" he argued for using scales from 1 to 10 to measure a person's attraction to the opposite sex and to the same sex separately. A very similar model would later be proposed in early #asexuality communities 100 years later.

This picture is an excerpt of a letter [1] written to Heresies magazine which appeared in a 1981 issue. In response to an article focusing on marginalised sexualities the author remarked "I also felt a bit left out [but] it's hard for me to believe that there are no others who share my situation".
Scan of a magazine reading: It would be a lot easier to refute these messages, to say, "I am what I am and there's nothing wrong with it," if we asexuals had the help of a support group such as lesbians and gay men have. The problem is that asexuals don't organize to support each other; most of us are ashamed to admit our situation even to close friends, let alone march up Fifth Avenue shouting it to the world. And yet how much more we need this support, how good it would be if we could have it!

I’m not on the asexuality spectrum. But as a queer, feminist researcher, I think we should all care about asexuality. Why? Because asexual perspectives can help us better understand sexuality—and gender, race, disability, family, love, etc. Here’s why:

Yeah, this seems accurate for me😅
Greysexual or Greyasexual, also spelled Graysexual (shortened to Grey Ace or Grace) is a sexual orientation on the asexual spectrum, referring to those who relate to asexuality, yet feel that there are parts of their experience that aren't fully described by the word asexual. Greysexual can be used as a specific identity, or as an umbrella term for any ace-spec identity that isn't purely asexual, including demisexual and others.

Asexuals are significantly more likely not be right-handed compared to heterosexuals, with a prevalence of over 25% [1]. This same effect of being less likely to be right-handed is also found among homosexual individuals #asexualfacts

In 1971, the Village Voice newspaper published a satirical article titled “Asexuals Have Problems Too!”. Although the article was insincere, the paper received dozens of letters [1] from readers who embraced the idea and identified with its message. [1] The Village Voice, vol. XVI, no. 10, p. 4

The y-axis is labelled "HOMO-EROTICISM" and the x-axis is labelled "HETERO-EROTICISM". The figure is captioned "Four orientation categories generated by a two-dimensional model."
