if it includes descriptors of audio in brackets, it’s probably closed captions, which are based on dubbed audio. so in that case the language wouldn’t be the same

if “time and effort” mattered to toby, why would he only localize his games into japanese, one of the most complex languages to translate from english? a language he didn’t even speak (at the time of undertale’s translation) or have any cultural connection to?

@jacobstar.me In case you aren’t aware, YouTube seem to be doing a (very small) A/B test of left-aligned (unless specified), rounded corners in subtitles. Its current implementation is causing issues with the background layer (but not the window layer) when different colors are used across lines.

why would a spanish translation cause a longer delay? the two translations would be done simultaneously by two different teams. also, japanese is one of the hardest languages to translate from english, so delays clearly aren’t a big issue for toby

i think you’re missing the point that translation is subjective and there’s no “officially perfect” way to do it. whether there’s bias towards the earlier translation or not, that doesn’t make anyone’s subjective feelings toward the later translation “wrong”.

preservation of the author’s intent is the job of a translator. toby’s fixation on permitting only “perfect” translations is ridiculous considering he knows firsthand (after seeing responses to some of the decisions made in the japanese localization) that there’s no such thing as perfect.
