shout out to the “Hot Girls 4 Zohran” page for a great ballot question explainer and endorsement of voting YES on ballot measures 2-4
OUR THOUGHTS
This isn't a power-grab, it's an attempt to expedite an unnecessarily slow process.
Opposition claims that taking power away from city council is undemocratic - however city council is still present at several points throughout this process. These props just grant the ability to overturn a veto to a board that consists of 3 democratically elected officials - the mayor, the borough president, and the speaker of City Council.
For too long, we have relied on a process in which a minority can veto and overturn decisions on affordable housing projects that impact hundreds of thousands of people - resulting in a system in which nothing ever gets done. It's slow, it's painful, it's not progressive.
Shifting this power isn't undemocratic, it's efficient. In a time where the housing crisis is reaching a boiling point, it's necessary to remove any and all roadblocks to progress.DON'T JUST TAKE IT FROM US.

In many ways it's fitting that the showdown between monarchy and democracy ends up being over NYC congestion pricing. Cities are where the power of kings were first challenged, and few things are more fundamental to government than control of public space. The cameras are staying on!
A cartoon with a sign that looks like a classic NYC no parking sign but is modified to say "No King Any Time", above a cartoon showing a cybertruck with a crown on it running over speed bumps and sawhorse barricades labeled Congress, Executive Branch, and Courts. It is stopped in front of bollards with a Congestion Pricing sign above it. In the background on the left is the Washington DC skyline with tire tracks coming out of a building. On the right behind the congestion pricing sign are the Statue of Liberty in front of the Jersey City skyline, an NYC walkup apartment with a bodega, people on bikes and walking, the Manhattan skyline, a subway train, and a bus in a bus only lane, and Pizza Rat.

I’m thrilled that NYC passed City of Yes. More than a unit count, what we've done is change the deeply inequitable status quo for housing in NYC. Allowing more housing types in more places - and ensuring that *every* neighborhood allows housing - is how we'll build a more affordable, integrated NYC.
