MtH is awesome, but GTA6 is coming out this year (unfortunately) and Ace Combat 8 is already stealing a lot of people's hearts. It's been a great year for games, but a bad year for gamers with not much money to play everything coming out. It's gonna be a tough TGAs.

Ahead of Ace Combat 8's release, I feel like my potentially blasphemous ranking of the series (that I've played) is: Five > Four > Six > Zero > Seven which feels kinda nuts to write out but also the delta between the first and last on that list is tiny.

FUCK YES that's my emotional support AC tier list. Five deserves a remake, it has the best story, most emotional beats, best message, most impactful characters. No shade to the others in the series, but 5 could be perfect and accessible to non-fans with a bit of modern polish.

When looking for unique places I could place my VN I landed on Catalonia, specifically the deeply rural locations where witch trials could have historically been carried out by locals in small communities. There was also plenty of lore to cover with ancient humanity.

Instantly thought of Helldivers when I read your post. It's intended to be difficult and to make you feel like you're in a meat grinder. Counterpoint: devs can decide to alter their intended vision if a large audience is found. Helldivers can go from a Dark Souls soldier game, to a power fantasy.

That's not the issue. It's natural for art to reiterate and improve upon something else. The problem is the effort and intent put into it. Making something better cause you want to make something better, versus making more of the same cause you want to make a quick buck.

I know it's a marketing tactic to feel good about saving a few cents on that stuff, but it makes me more likely to buy a game. I want to support good practices. In a world of enshittification, Valve is a last stand in the gaming marketplace.

There's plenty "woke" gun/military creators out there that are pretty great, like Hickock45 and (RIP) Paul Harrell. I would start with trying to understand the politics of your friends and seeing if you can find creators that align with them already to keep them away from certain "influences".

I don't disagree. For me however, the "slop" comes in from the fact they seem to come out by the dozens, iterating on one another with only some changes (mechanical, presentation, or otherwise) between them. "Slop" is in being presented with a trough full of them, regardless of quality.
