This is Ihor Malchevskyi, a 69-year-old scientist at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, escaping the flames after a Russian attack. I could also write, "the whole world watched this live," but we can see that news from Ukraine has long been out of focus. 📹: DW

Imagine if a giant monolith from the future arrived from the future, completely destroying a nearby city. And on that "chronolith" is a celebration of the victory of a future dictator, warning you of the reign to come in the future. And what if more and more of these chronoliths appear? ...

An excellent duology (at least I think it's a duology!) by Robert J. Sawyer. His works always make me think about both our modern times and our future days and the situations and answers to complex problems are never easy.

One of the many things I loved about the Journey concert was that they had a giant drummer playing a tiny drum kit.

Russia bombs Ukrainian civilians on purpose. Russia aids Iran in bombing American soldiers. Russia pays for part of the president's son's wedding. It's like a Russian stacking doll of destruction and payoffs.

Yann Martel's latest novel came at the perfect time for me. I was already in the midst of a mini-obsession with The Odyssey movie, so my mind was primed for this novel about an alternate version of The ILLIAD and a professor who left his family to study it in England.

Authors, alas, get so many of these AI generated emails offering to boost the sales of our books. Most of them I delete at once, but I love this one and may frame it. Why? Because Wuerfelendzucker is the greatest name of all kind. I must use it in a novel. A king? A spy? A baker?

We think about this possible Canada-EU Association as a bulwark against the American administration's need to dominate trade. It is. But it may also turn out to give us much more power to wield against an equally large set of opponents: Meta, Google, and

Warning: If you have your very own Russian oligarch don't let them stand near a window in a tall building. They tend to fall out. No one knows why. Maybe they are top heavy. Or have slippery shoes. Also don't take them on a target range. They sometimes step in front of bullets.

If someone asks how you are, you can answer, "Peachy Keen." But if things go wrong in your life you can say "things went pear shaped." Also, if someone bad bothers you, you can call that person a "rotten apple." How would we ever communicate without fruit in our lives?

As an author who’s been around in the biz for almost 30 years, I’ve loved watching Dungeon Crawler Carl climb up the charts. Yep, I watched Harry Potter and The Hunger Games come out of nowhere and spread like wildfire.

When people say they are getting their "affairs in order" I am curious about a couple of things: How many affairs are they having? Do they order them chronologically or alphabetically? Or is it order of importance?

If we made the green energy transition this war would be unthinkable and these authoritarians wouldn’t be in power — not in the US, not in Iran, not in Saudi Arabia, not in Russia. Hydrocarbons are killing our freedom and just plain killing us.

The term “law enforcement” should not be used by media, except perhaps in quotations. It has sadly become an Orwellian term that is used to magically sanctify violence. Language matters. Be specific. Describe individuals with names and ranks. Say exactly what they did. Don’t repeat fascist hocum.
