But as a writer, I am impressed by a writing team that has essentially paused the long-form story to tell us one small touching moment.

he finds a version of his mother who, in that world, lost her son when he was young. It was some of the most powerful and moving TV I've seen — for the obvious personal reasons.

I am not a religious person, but I am a science fiction fan, so when my daughter died from cancer, one of my small comforts was the idea of the multiverse: there are other worlds the same but slightly different from ours. I could imagine another

Just finished Metaloria by @arthurslade.bsky.social. It’s an action-packed and humorous epic fantasy/lit RPG novel set in a heavy metal-inspired world. Very enjoyable and totally original. If you’re a fan of Dungeon Crawler Carl and looking for your next read, definitely check this one out! #canlit

But it's not surprising. Elon sees other people as NPCs. Trump sees them as marks. I'm glad the outcry forced a reversal (they're blaming each other now). But it'll happen again. Or worse. What country buys Starlink now?

Trump once said he could shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue and not lose voters. Now it could be: "I could let Ukrainians die and no one would care." The move to throttle Starlink/Starshield speeds for the Ukrainian army — to force them into surrendering land — is aggressively amoral.

If you like Brazil or Dr. Strangelove, you may 'dig' this movie. I was glad I knew nothing about it, other than seeing the trailer. My only complaint is that it felt a little long. But that could be my prostate talking. There were three people in total in the theatre, so, uh, see it soon.

For some orange reason people are just discovering that dumb has a b. But do they know dummy does not have a b? It's not dumby! Clearly the deep state has done this! What are your conspiracy theories about the missing b?

attitude and misinformation is widespread in our province. So much so that our SK government will spend billions on a more expensive technology that will take many years to build. Did you know that wind-driven power is the cheapest available in SK?

"Great that you don't have any stupid solar panels that cause brownouts," the guy said. This is a paraphrased (and swear-free) quote from one of the prospective buyers for our ranch. As someone who has rooftop solar and saves about $150 a month I didn't argue. I wanted the ranch to sell. But this

Can you stop the future? That is one of the questions in Robert Charles Wilson's The Chronoliths. Yes, I'm on a Canadian SF kick lately. I do love all the details of the science in this novel that don't overwhelm the story. And the fact that the characters all feel so absolutely real is a bonus.

Imagine if a giant monolith from the future arrived from the future, completely destroying a nearby city. And on that "chronolith" is a celebration of the victory of a future dictator, warning you of the reign to come in the future. And what if more and more of these chronoliths appear? ...

The audiobooks were particularly entertaining, because they are narrated by a group of actors including Brendan Fraser. If I was uploaded into the perfect world, I don't know if I'd want to be downloaded back into this one... #canadianSF

An excellent duology (at least I think it's a duology!) by Robert J. Sawyer. His works always make me think about both our modern times and our future days and the situations and answers to complex problems are never easy.

Russia bombs Ukrainian civilians on purpose. Russia aids Iran in bombing American soldiers. Russia pays for part of the president's son's wedding. It's like a Russian stacking doll of destruction and payoffs.

He also spoke about his habit of writing more pages of notes than the actual novel. As someone who wings it with my writing most of the time I found that fascinating. The wait was well worth it.

I won't outline the story more than that, but will say that I have been waiting for years for this book after hearing Yann talk about driving a tiny car through a thunderstorm on a narrow highway whilst dodging semis in his quest to see the site of Troy.

Yann Martel's latest novel came at the perfect time for me. I was already in the midst of a mini-obsession with The Odyssey movie, so my mind was primed for this novel about an alternate version of The ILLIAD and a professor who left his family to study it in England.

Authors, alas, get so many of these AI generated emails offering to boost the sales of our books. Most of them I delete at once, but I love this one and may frame it. Why? Because Wuerfelendzucker is the greatest name of all kind. I must use it in a novel. A king? A spy? A baker?

Warning: If you have your very own Russian oligarch don't let them stand near a window in a tall building. They tend to fall out. No one knows why. Maybe they are top heavy. Or have slippery shoes. Also don't take them on a target range. They sometimes step in front of bullets.

If someone asks how you are, you can answer, "Peachy Keen." But if things go wrong in your life you can say "things went pear shaped." Also, if someone bad bothers you, you can call that person a "rotten apple." How would we ever communicate without fruit in our lives?
