In many industries, DEI is not a ‘nice thing to have’ but a crucial requirement for survival and growth.

Here's an e-mail that just went out to NASA agency wide. 🔭
Letter reading, "Dear agency employees,
We are taking steps to close all agency DEIA offices and end all DEIA-related contracts
in accordance with President Trump’s executive orders titled Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing and Initial Rescissions of Harmful Executive
Orders and Actions.
These programs divided Americans by race, wasted taxpayer dollars, and resulted in
shameful discrimination.
We are aware of efforts by some in government to disguise these programs by using coded or imprecise language. If you are aware of a change in any contract description or personnel position description since November 5, 2024 to obscure the connection between the contract and DEIA or similar ideologies, please report all facts and circumstances to
DEIAtruth@opm.gov within 10 days.
There will be no adverse consequences for timely reporting this information. However,
failure to report this information within 10 days may result in adverse consequences.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Janet Petro"

In Indonesia, after human rights violator Prabowo was elected as president, I saw Ibu Maria Sumarsih, the activist who lost her son in the 1998 violence, simply continued with her weekly Kamisan protest. That’s also when I thought: this is not game over, this is game on.

In Australia, news organisations and universities have retreated into their safe zones. Ones that have supported calls for social justice in the past became silent on Gaza. Ones that have profited from employing migrants and international education fell silent in the face of racism and xenophobia.

Bishop Mariann Budde reminds me of the compassionate and courageous Muslim teachers I had when I was young who steered me away from the world of deep hate to one that is open, kind & loving. Trump is like the hateful Muslim ‘leaders’ who wanted to recruit me to their cause for their personal glory.

We’re getting a DNA test for this beautiful old dog, Nina Van Horn (15 years old). We have no clue about her mix. We know one highly possible breed but the rest is a mystery. Result will be available in 2 weeks. Does anyone want to play a game and guess her mix? Will post result when it’s done!

I like to joke that people living in Melbourne like to talk about the weather but refuse to talk about the climate. But it’s good that there are good developers, architects, engineers etc who are doing the right things.

I just moved to a well-built concrete apartment building in Melbourne and guess what: in consecutive 40 degree days, no air conditioning was required. The apartment remained cool, around 25-30. This is in a north-facing apartment with floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors that get afternoon lights.

Before you share, repost, do, or call something 'journalism', ask: What verification was done? What context is missing? What voices weren't heard? Training yourself to ask these questions is a step towards being a more informed digital citizen and creating better, safer spaces on the internet.

And in the world today where people are being bombarded with information from many sides about many things, basic journalism skills should be owned by everyone, not just professional journalists. This is what I teach - not just specific skills for journos, but also how to face dis/misinformation.

Eg: a person livestreaming in front of a burnt shop isn't journalism. It's just broadcasting what they see. Journalism happens when they've interviewed the shop owner, residents, emergency services, checked police reports, and verified when/how the fire started - THEN tell and publish the story.

Tito Ambyo @arsisto.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
Journalism at its best is a discipline of verification and truth-seeking. It’s a set of skills that require training to develop and polish, and require many hours of work that often end up being invisible once we get to the stage of publishing and storytelling.

Tito Ambyo @arsisto.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
Good journalism is important but we often confuse the acts of publishing, storytelling and journalism. Journalism is not the same as publishing or storytelling. Most people have access to publish information. Many can tell stories convincingly. Neither requires journalism.

Sharing my little exchange from the other website. I've only just written it, and I don't have the space to deal with trolls today, so I'll log off. But it's so bloody annoying and hypocritical that people like Babet are asking others to be polite and quiet when it comes to accusations of racism.

This is not me playing the race card or jumping on the diversity bus. This is me realising the biggest challenges we are facing today have roots in colonial and capitalist power structures and the key to engaging effectively with these structures is in listening to minorities and Indigenous people.

But the challenge that I am taking on right now is in embracing how to be a minority and to find power and solidarity in it. I've spent a lot of time and energy trying to adapt to White spaces in Australia (my background as an ultra-hegemonic Javanese Muslim Straight guy in Indonesia helps!).

They wrote beautiful stories that reflect the realities of living in Australia today, including a story of supermarket workers who ‘never’ saw anyone stealing 🤘🏽 and an old woman who runs a covert operation to steal lemons from her neighbour’s tree 😂

This year, three of my journalism students in Australia separately pitched stories exploring ‘ethical stealing’ in a time when living costs are soaring so high that people are stealing from supermarkets that have been making so much profit.

Maybe this is one of the reasons why many good narrative podcasts, with casual presenting style, work so well. It sounds more authentic and honest, and the way I trust a journalist on a good narrative podcast is like the way I trust my friends.

I’m still thinking this through, but we journalists have played a part in creating this circus of respectability and trustworthiness based on how it looks and sounds. Now I think we have to actively shape ways of packaging news and information that’s closer to the way people talk to each other.
