i remember being okay with it 75% of the time but a lot of this was very careful curation of my algo so that the vast majority of what i'd see was either friends or Hunter x Hunter fanart. and it *still* sucked a decent amount of the time.

The Jacket is probably my favorite published adventure in the whole breadth of Cyberpunk, from 2013/2020 to now, except for *MAYBE* Cabin Fever. you're in for a treat with it.

true, but i don't think that's a necessary evil to ensure quality or an inherent reason why they do a wider variety of genres/demographic targets/etc, and i think the former framing is counterproductive if you *needed* to underpay people and work them to death for these things kyoani wouldn't exist

up until basically COVID, any animation that wasn't specifically family movies or low-substance TV for kids was seen as a gimmick in the US- bakshi, heavy metal, the earliest mature anime releases like Akira and Wicked City japan has had *decades* to entrench ideas we're basically just adopting

...i don't think you're, like, WAY off the mark but it's complicated. a lot of why japanese animation runs circles around the US would be the case either way, no matter what, because japan has very very different broad cultural attitudes towards animation and an industry that developed much *wider*

...this seems like a strange leveling to me for several reasons. one, i don't think we should be labeling the use of non-generative ML at all or lumping it in with AI. it does not have the same externalities applying to it and the lumping-together creates wide confusion (see: recent Capcom news)
