I would kill or die for Larry

A small operation in Oregon that hunts truffles with a trained dog has added an unpaid trainee. A cat named Larry accompanies the handler and the truffle dog into the woods every outing, works a patch of ground a little apart from them, and digs with tremendous confidence in places where there is nothing.
The handler says Larry has never found a truffle and shows no sign of understanding the assignment. He does not use scent the way the dog does and he does not respond when the dog makes a find.
He simply digs his own holes nearby and then inspects them. "He thinks he's on the team," the handler said. "He is emphatically not on the team."

Her grip slipped — she fell — and worse, did so right into the mechanic’s arms.

The mechanic grinned — then squatted down and tossed her up, directly into the capsule.

“Go on,” the mechanic called as Lysithea struggled to right herself. “Make us proud, kid.”

I saw your ship.
Same as it ever was, minus a few welded-on panels where hull should have been. I could hardly believe that it still flew, let alone performed well enough to earn a few new marks. Though you always were good at tinkering with things until they worked.
Or fell apart.
I can’t believe it’s been three years and I still have the impulse to punch in the door code and flop onto that travesty you call a couch. I also can’t believe that some of the best naps I ever had were on that stupid thing.
Worst of all, I can’t believe I miss it.
You’d probably ask something stupid like, “Miss what?” with a dumb smirk on your face as if you didn’t know exactly what I was talking about. And then of course I’d start listing things like a dolt, and you’d listen to me pour my heart out to you like you were doing something charitable instead of having me play into your hand like you always did. If you were feeling generous, you’d cut off my insane rambling by picking me up and squeezing the air out of me so I’d spare myself the embarrassment of chattering on like some lovesick puppy.
That would also have me playing into your hand anyway, because I miss those bone-crushing hugs, too.
