Years in the making, I finally have a working prototype of my Camera GBD-M2 (previously shared as Game Boy Camera M2). A sequel to the Game Boy Camera M1, this new redesign uses original Game Boy Pocket & Game Boy Camera chips into a camera-like shape roughly the same size as the Ricoh GR III.

This gets to a crucial point: big AI models must be nationalized, not only to control their impact and uses, but also because they appropriated our collective knowledge.

More importantly, we have a moral claim to ownership: we, as a society, helped make AI possible. It’s not just that government investments have helped kick-start and sustain the tech sector; AI’s success is uniquely built on the uploading of our collective works. This year Anthropic ripped the spines off of, scanned, and then discarded millions of print books — including some long out of print — to “train” its large language models. It’s a scandal. And not just for bibliophiles. Machine learning tools have now “listened to” millions of hours of human-generated music in order to generate new, fully fabricated AI clones. The same is true for generative video which, after having sucked up the entire corpus of digitized video, can now mimic the style of any given director or produce the likeness of any given actor. The collective product of countless authors, thinkers, tinkerers, artists, photographers, filmmakers, craftsmen, farmers, gardeners, designers, architects, and so on have been uploaded into its “brain.” These millions of human “teachers” will forever be uncredited and certainly unpaid for their service.

I've been running a mashup of OSE and Mythic Bastionland! It's full analog, no screens. The game is on a hexmap but the players can't see it, and instead they get unhelpful hand drawn maps. Also my DM screen is 4 pieces of cardboard taped together.

Sea of Stars is so damn good. The combat, the environment design, Garl, cooking. It's all so good. I wish it started in media res; the first hour of the game feels very "tutorial" and so far the pace is very slow/cozy. The moment to moment gameplay is so solid that I barely notice tho!

So, “Order of the Sinking Star” by Thekla was just announced, which takes several small free games (two of which are mine) and gives them a major graphical upgrade and mashes up their rulesets. I haven’t been very involved but it’s a great concept and looks cool.

I added some conveniences to ease development. Being able to step through the ROM and observe the effect of each instruction will help a ton. Also, it is using an actual ROM now instead of a toy program (I haven't implemented the bootROM yet but I think that's my next project).

Oops! I started working on a game boy emulator in c compiled to wasm (because I want wasm stuff on my Github so that I can get wasm jobs, but also because emulator!). This is the CPU state after running a tiny test program that copies a tile into VRAM (and a primitive busted visualization of VRAM).

There is something truly remarkable about Generative AI. Several years in this revolution, half of the US GDP dumped to make these tools free, and i can't think of a single generated artifact, text, image, sound, video that had a significant cultural impact.

“You can buy something on Itch and give Itch itself $0. Many people do.
Many more people are doing so now as some form of boycott or protest.
There are many anecdotes that say that Leafo runs Itch completely on their own, even going so far as to hand-process payouts and do their own social media and PR. I'd call that overworked, but that isn't the point either.
Recently a journalist (I don't want to even draw attention to the thread) reported Itch "knew for two years this was coming" (dubious), and did nothing about it mostly due to a lack of resources. They recommended boycotting Itch to punish them for this.
My take here is this: there was never a reality on the table where pressure would force Itch to somehow find a solution faster, or a better solution.
They lack the resources and can't absorb the fees of high risk processing.
The reality here is this pressure is more likely to kill Itch than improve the situation.
In my opinion, what they need is support coupled with the pressure to use that support to find a better solution. That may involve a surcharge on adult content and piping those transactions through a high risk MSP. That may involve saying "We have to institute a minimum share on purchases" and using those funds to expand staff and develop a better option.
To do so at this particular moment though would be the PR nail in the coffin. But regardless, if they didn't "do better" because of resources, denying them resources won't fix it!”

This is one reason you should target a 50 year old platform, rather than writing your game in a big engine. Unity is never going to be able to deploy on as many platforms as game boy can.
