This is fantastic. You almost never see someone post that their initial hot take was wrong and why - on any social. Huzzah for @evacide.bsky.social!

would be super willing to share details of a lab leak? Ongoing technical matters like sharing flu typing likely falls under bureaucratic SOPs - nobody is gonna demand access to your military biolab over this season's flu. But might you be blamed for a novel pathogen that causes the next pandemic?

There have been decades long arguments between realists, neo-realists, liberals, liberal institutionalism, constructivists, etc. about the utility of international orgs. In this case, Russia said nyet to sharing and what happened? With China and Covid? And one think the current Administration

The fact that one doesn't need the latest frontier model to find the answer is why I don't invite you to sit on public health panels any longer (really it's because I don't have that job any longer). Everyone asking about IHR and other WHO regulations should go down the political science rabbit hole

I don't think it's reached the impact that tech bros are selling, at least in general society. But I also think there is strong evidence it is useful and impactful beyond complaints of "slop."

I think you're underestimating not only the usefulness of current models, but the ubiquity of machine learning software. Mapping, car share, etc. all basically that same tech. I have AI searching job sites and drafting cover letters. Following news stories and providing daily updates (with links).

I commented on his post, so I'll only point out PSAs are hard; that guidance isn't wrong; consider most responsible local and state agencies think all hazard; there are other types of radiation incidents that don't involve nuclear explosions.

That's an interesting take on Civil Defense. Have you read any Wellerstein or Graff on the topic? It seemed to be wrestled with at the highest levels, if eventually considered hopeless. And mitigation naturally fell to the lowest levels because that's how our system is designed.

I actually wouldn't think so. Probably most bars outside are safer, especially if there is any type of breeze going. A BASEMENT bar where people are drinking? With what I'd guess isn't the newest HVAC system, best ventilation, or even Corsi-Rosenthal boxes. That "briefly" does a lot of work...

I hear you. I lived in Buffalo and worked in public health preparedness during the pandemic, though not in NYS. It drove me crazy to watch a local hotel get fined for putting on outside jazz shows with social distancing picnics but folks could eat and drink inside when "masked."

I was there for a concert 2 weeks ago, but sure, GO (like the train) with the professor from Toronto's burbs...share the 🦋 conservatory for real. And if they dress in light colors it improves the chances of butterflies landing on them.

Good thing I didn't lead with the "grew up in NF and went to TO all the time" thing because the news it closed is new to me. But apparently moving to a new building on the lake shore that looks incredible. But not in time for your colleague's visit.

Having lived in Boston for more than a decade, the Globe has always had national ambitions but still often covered "small town Mass" human interest stories. And mask wearing in a bar or restaurant only works if you don't drink or eat anything.

What's behind this tidal wave of epidemics? In the largest study ever conducted on emerging infectious diseases, we show that the popular explanation - "our relationship with nature is out of balance" - doesn't hold up. Out now in Nature, after half a decade of work: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

There's also a science museum in Toronto geared towards kids, though I'm not sure if 3 year olds would enjoy it.

I'd suggest the ballet, but the kid should wait 16 years for that experience... kidding aside, down the river, after the Falls, there's a butterfly conservatory that I bet most 3 year olds would love.

It's easier to crap on an immigrant owned local business than actually give up anything AI-enabled that would cause inconvenience? I actually live in Buffalo and don't want local businesses to fail, while others cry about a poster while continuing to use map apps, ride sharing, and Resy.

More importantly, every time someone uses toothpaste they could potentially be ingesting something dangerous. Every time I use AI to look up and compare weather conditions for 3 different cities on Christmas, I am in no danger of accidentally creating a WMD.

Speaking of nuclear issues...can you recommend some reading that explains the pre-enrichment work performed on uranium, including the resulting waste streams? There's a bit of a radiation kerfuffle going on up here in WNY (though mostly related to slag produced from non-weapons work), 1/2
