A red-tailed hawk, with the head to the upper left and the tail to the lower right. The hawk has its back mostly turned toward the camera, but is peering at the camera over its left shoulder. The back is mostly dark brown but the feathers show a complex mix of barring and, here and there, lighter colors. The head is brown, with a brown eye. The beak is mostly gray, and is strongly downcurved at the end. The hawk is sitting in a bare, very gnarly treetop, and its tail is mostly concealed by branches. The background for the image is the gray of a cloudy sky.

My uncle in North Carolina just sent me this picture of a Hickory Horned Devil, which is the large, striking caterpillar stage of the Regal Moth (Citheronia regalis). The largest caterpillar native to North America. They commonly grow between 5 to 6 inches long (12.5 to 15 cm). Absolutely gorgeous
