:: Special Announcement :: Join us on Saturday, November 21st for a 50 year White Water Tavern anniversary show featuring the Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Dan Penn and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Spooner Oldham. This will be a fully-seated evening of legendary songs, timeless stories, and Southern soul w/ Arkansas great Greg Spradlin opening the show. Only 85 tickets will be sold - get yours for $60 at www.whitewatertavern.com

Known for their remarkable contributions to American music, Penn and Oldham have helped shape the sound of Southern soul and written songs that have become part of the musical landscape. This special performance offers audiences the chance to hear these two icons share their music, stories, and the history behind the songs.

The extensive list of musicians Spooner Oldham has played with includes Arlo Guthrie, Jim Croce, Gram Parsons, The Everly Brothers, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Gene Clark, Ry Cooder, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett, Bob Seger, Maria Muldaur, Rita Coolidge, Bobby Womack, Albert King, Helen Reddy, Harry Nilsson, Stephen Stills, J.J. Cale, Drive By Truckers, and Neil Young. In his earlier days, he also made his way to the FAME studios and had the first of many collaborations with Penn. Among their notable FAME triumphs were Percy Sledge’s “It Tears Me Up,” James and Bobby Purify’s “I’m Your Puppet."

Dan Penn is an American songwriter, singer, musician, and record producer, who co-wrote many soul hits of the 1960s, including The Dark End of the Street, Do Right Woman, Do Right Man, and Cry Like a Baby. Penn also produced many hits, including "The Letter", by The Box Tops. His songs have been recorded by the likes of Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, James Carr, Percy Sledge, Janis Joplin, Charlie Rich, Albert King, Jerry Garcia, Nick Lowe, Alex Chilton, Clarence Carter, and countless more.

For folks yet to hear the heartbreaking news, Wes Ambrose, one of the greatest friends the WWT has ever known, passed on to the other side last Thursday. A big celebration of life will be held here at 2pm on Sunday, October 26th. We love you, Wes. We love you, Mimi. Thank you.
For any folks yet to hear the heartbreaking news, Wes Ambrose, one of the greatest friends the White Water Tavern has ever known, passed on to the other side last Thursday, October 9th. The most important thing to know about Wes is that he loved his precious wife Mimi more than anything in the universe, and that she treasured him equally so. To witness their love for one another is an inexhaustible supply of inspiration. Wes started hanging at the White Water back in the early 70's when it was still just a ramshackle joint called The Pitcher. He witnessed every iteration of the White Water in the ensuing years, becoming one of its most profound historians and greatest ambassadors along the way. If you've grabbed a handful of candy out of the silver bowl on your way out of the door, it's because Wes personally refilled it on a weekly basis, a long standing tradition he inherited years ago. Wes loved music. He loved his friends and kindly welcomed strangers to our little corner of the world. He always told it like it is. Wes helped to guide us through so much over the last twenty years and we will love and miss him forever. A big celebration of life will be held here at 2pm on Sunday, October 26th. Come raise a Budweiser in honor of this sweet man. Any memories of Wes are welcome here. We love you, Wes. We love you, Mimi. Thank you.

this quote made me think of @andrewhickey.500songs.com “ the economy of the Mississippi Delta in 1900 was so closely tied to markets in London, Manchester and Liverpool, it was practically a colony.“ I like to think of the blues as music born in isolation, but the world is smaller than I think.
