The Hague is fun, but the politics that determine my kids’ future, take place in Brussels, Washington and somewhere between Beijing and New Delhi. Deep down the 10 years in London still affect my outlook on geo-politics and economics.

Instead of arguing about what happened 10 years ago, perhaps the British debate should focus on 1) the very real threat emanating from Russia NOW, including but not limited to disinformation 2) Britain‘s future strategy in a geopolitically turbulent world which makes Brexit look even more absurd

Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

I thought I had seen it all, but this is an astonishing new low, putting the US in the company of Iran, Afghanistan and N Korea. I abhor the death penalty. The idea that kids, including my own, might see such an execution shocks me to the core. Abhorrent, barbaric, sick, warped, cruel and twisted.

"Not the odds, but the stakes."

Apart from the brilliant reaction by the organisers. Do I understand this correctly? Suppose I was supporting/sponsoring a conference about the dangers of burglars. And the chairman of the Burglar Union (BU) would tell me to stop this. And ominously added that he knows where my family lives. ???

This is one of Niall’s most important threads, because it sets out the course of events that, although conveniently forgotten or dismissed by many in the UK, necessarily colours the EU’s assessment of the UK as a potential member, and explains why the EU cannot take the UK’s bona fides for granted.

While we know that the UK hasn’t even started asking what is needed to commence the process of agreeing on the process and criteria of rejoining. Something of a Barnier-in-reverse circus I expect.

Arjan Struik @arjanstruik.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
But sometimes it is a bit much to digest how the issues about rejoining are framed. “If we give in on A and B and the EU compromises on this and that (e.g. FoM), we’ll rejoin.” Just like that.
