The clearest and most succinct expression I've read of how, beyond the clear fascist rhetoric, the Prairieland prosecutions have terrifyingly expanded federal legal power, beyond the point many feds even wanted to go.
For other activists on the left — and on the right — the Prairieland case has set a dangerous precedent. Cadeddu, the federal defense attorney, told me that the most worrying of all the “terrorist acts” was vandalism. There is no dollar amount set on what sort of damage might qualify as an act of terror. Even throwing a snowball at an ICE vehicle during a protest and scratching the paint or damaging a taillight might qualify. “In theory, if you happen to be on a Signal chat with some people planning a protest, and one of the people at that protest — you don’t even have to know them — throws that snowball, you could be implicated in material support for terrorism, simply for helping to organize,” she says. “That’s the meaning of the case.”

...Assumption #2 is "Trans people are a brand-new minority group, so you just need to be patient until the rest of society is finally ready to accept you." even though this is completely untrue, many cis ppl sadly seem to believe it... juliaserano.medium.com/on-democrats...
screenshot from the linked-to essay that reads:
I’ve been involved in trans communities since the early 1990s, and during that entire time trans people have acted locally — in their schools, workplaces, and communities — to increase awareness and challenge discriminatory practices. The International Olympic Committee began allowing trans athletes to compete way back in 2004, and gender-affirming care for trans youth is now almost three decades old. These are not by any means “novel” or “radical” developments.
When I transitioned 25 years ago, trans people were able to get our documents changed to reflect our current lived sex in most jurisdictions. But since 2025, the Trump administration and several red states have reversed those policies. In other words, trans people are not asking for new rights, we are losing rights that we’ve had for decades!
So whenever a Democrat comes out in favor of trans sports bans or restrictions on trans healthcare, those are not neutral positions, they are actively participating in the rolling back of trans rights that have long existed!

...Assumption #1 is that trans ppl are "overreacting" to Talarico, Turek, et al.'s recently announced anti-trans positions... juliaserano.medium.com/on-democrats...
screenshot from linked-to essay that reads:
Assumption #1: These politicians’ positions are not that big of a deal, trans people are merely overreacting
This assumption is especially common regarding sports. But as I discuss in my Trans People and Sports essay, the language and rationale behind trans sports bans (e.g., that trans girls women are “biological males”) is the exact same language and framing that red states and the Trump administration have used to deny trans people driver’s licenses and passports, gender-affirming care, access to restrooms, jobs in the military, and so forth. This is why sports are not a compromise position!
If you doubt this, can I ask you, have you ever once heard a Democratic politician say, “I’m opposed to trans people playing sports, but I will fight for their rights on every other issue”? No, you haven’t! Nobody ever says that. Because once they cave on trans sports, it’s a sign that they are willing to backpedal on other trans rights if it is politically expedient for them (as we’ve just seen with Talarico and Turek embracing restrictions on both trans athletes and trans healthcare).

...all the animosity hurled towards trans ppl the last few days is completely misplaced. this is a *cisgender problem*: cis ppl need to decide whether you want us to be part of the anti-MAGA coalition or not. if you do, then call out the Dems pushing us out... juliaserano.medium.com/on-democrats...
screenshot from linked-to essay that reads:
Trans people are people. And politics works the exact same way on us as it does for everyone else. If you’re a politician or a political party, then you’re going to strive to build yourself a winning coalition. You will do this by saying what you are for and what you are against. Depending upon the principles and policies you forward, some voters will be drawn to you and others not so much. You can’t please everybody. But you are the ultimate “decider” of said policies and principles! And if you decide to ignore, discard, or demonize a particular constituency, it is inevitable that *some* of them will become disenchanted and may turn elsewhere when it comes to election day.
For the love of God, stop blaming trans people for all of this! Blame the cisgender politicians and consultants who are ignoring, discarding, and demonizing us. Call them divisive, as they are the ones who are attempting to divide our current anti-MAGA coalition in the name of (misguided) political expediency.

🧵 of excerpts from my latest essay “On Democrats Who Cave in Response to Anti-Trans Attack Ads.” it makes several points I haven't seen others making. here's a main one: many cis reactions reveal they don't actually view trans ppl as part of their coalition... juliaserano.medium.com/on-democrats...
screenshot from linked-to essay that reads:
In my book Excluded — which examines the recurring problem of how marginalized groups are often excluded from movements that they have a stake in — I discuss (on p.57) how the word “divisive” is a red flag for me. To paraphrase that passage: When trans people critique trans-exclusion within our own communities and coalitions, we are often called “divisive” for doing so. In contrast, I have never once heard anyone use the word “divisive” to describe cis people who promote or tacitly support trans-exclusion (in this case, Talarico, Turek, et al.). The fact that acts that marginalize trans people are not typically described as being “divisive” implies that there is a presumed and unspoken “one-ness” that exists in people’s minds that implicitly precludes trans people.
I’d argue that the central issue here isn’t what candidate X says about trans athletes or trans healthcare (although that is certainly important), or what trans person Y says in response. Rather, it’s that many cisgender Democrats will by default view Y as divisive and X as not. And by doing so, they are essentially communicating (whether they realize it or not) that trans people are not really a part of the Democratic coalition in their eyes: We are either votes to be taken for granted or else “dead weight” that the party should drop.

So when a Dem says they agree with any of this, they are taking a position that is against what trans people ALREADY HAD just 5 years ago. That's why trans people won't accept it. It's not about progress, it's about preventing a managed decline in civil rights agreed to by Democrats.

MEMORANDUM AND ORDER ON PLAINTIFES' MOTION FOR 5 U.S.C. § 705 STAY OR, IN THE ALTERNATIVE, PRELIMINARY INJUNCTION
ANGEL KELLEY, D.J.In 1872, Congress established Yellowstone National Park as the world's first national park, setting in motion the principle that natural wonders, historical sites, and cultural memory
belong to and serve the public. With over 433 park sites across the United States today, the
National Park system hosts millions of visitors each year seeking to enjoy the parks' iconic
views, monuments to our Nation's history, and memorials recognizing the sacrifice of many.
Beyond the scenic grandeur, the National Park system also serves as a cornerstone of public
learning, providing rich and informative signs, exhibits, and interpretive waysides on topics ranging from civil rights to environmentalism. From the echoes of abolition in John Brown's
Fort in Harpers Ferry, to the genesis of the modern LGBTQ+ civil rights movement at the
Stonewall National Monument, to the retreating ice of Glacier National Park in Alaska, the
National Parks preserve the multifaceted and multi-layered history of our Nation, including the good, the bad, and the ugly. Often referred to as "America's largest classroom," National Parks
serve in that spirit by telling the stories both of those who write history and those who go
unheard. The beauty of history is the unvarnished storytelling of a time gone by and the delivery
of undeniable truths. The Government's stewardship of these park sites thus carries a responsibility to present history in full rather than in favored fragments.Unfortunately, the Government has disregarded these principles. Under the guise of
promoting American dignity, this Administration seeks to share a limited history by ordering the
removal of all signs, displays, and interpretive exhibits at National Parks that do not align with
its preferred narrative, thereby telling half-truths. In recent months, the Government has torn
down exhibits in Philadelphia's Independence National Historical Park memorializing the legacy
1 162 Cong. Rec. H7207 (daily ed. Dec. 6, 2016).

Fort Sumter in South Carolina, one of the most environmentally endangered sites in the country;
and wiped away descriptions of history and science at countless National Parks across the United
States. Not only does this undermine the integrity of the National Parks; it sets a dangerous
precedent of censorship and sanitization. The National Park Service Organic Act, the National
Park Service Centennial Act, and the National Parks Omnibus Management Act, as well as the
Administrative Procedure Act do not authorize such arbitrary and capricious action. The Court
thus GRANTS Plaintiffs' Motion for a Stay Pursuant to 5 U.S.C. § 705.Because Defendants deemed it important to strip the parks of these undeniable truths in anticipation of the 250th Anniversary of our great Nation, it is equally important that our shared history be honestly told and fully restored by the 250th Anniversary to properly honor the remarkable achievements of the United States.
