The print depicts actresses Shinohara Asaji and Takamine Kikuko in the troupe's historic production of Jean d'Arc (Joan of Arc). The printed caption running along the lower margin explicitly identifies the play as "Jean d'Arc" (「ジャン・ダルク」) and attributes the performance to the Takarazuka Girls' Opera (寶塚少女歌劇). Founded just a few years prior in 1913, the all-female troupe was at the absolute vanguard of modern Japanese performing arts, captivated by the challenge of translating Western historical narratives, operatic styles, and costume design for Japanese audiences.
