I'm convinced that open social protocols like #atproto have a crucial role to play in the future of science. Excited to share MOSAIC - our best effort at articulating the thesis, why it matters, and how to build and fund it (in collab w/ @exgenesis.ingroup.social ) 🧵

Lead UX designer, @mikemorrison.bsky.social also studies interface design for scientists. He used @curvenote.com SCMS to host his own journal, Science UX: real DOIs, Google Scholar indexing, + more, published in one command. Same platform for a single researcher or a large publisher. Here's how 🎥

A map of the reader-facing and interface design side of scientific publishing, the field in which ARCH, Press, RSM Studio, and the rest of Aris are built for, and the many others building in it.

This is why @atproto.science is so relevant rn This compilation of essays indicates that scientists are most frustrated by insufficient “community tools and resources... Essential infrastructure for sharing, maintaining and building on existing work and data is also badly underdeveloped." >

Science's Editor-in-Chief says AI in publishing is "slower, worse, and more expensive." Same journal, same month that published Biomni. Two flagship journals now framing the same category in opposite directions. hallway.aris.pub/no/017/

Biomni is now in 10,000+ labs and just cleared peer review in Science. Same week, DeepMind's Co-Scientist published in Nature. Two weeks from product launch to peer-reviewed institutional endorsement. The verification layer is already behind.

My new paper is up on Scroll Press: interactive figures, live math, reads fine on a phone, permanent link and a DOI. scroll.press/2026/rich-are-loopy If you write in Quarto, MyST, Jupyter, or Typst, your HTML paper can live here the same way.

The infrastructure question still lies beyond the capability question this week: vocabulary for what counts as a citation, provenance signals that survive retrieval, paper formats that recognize AI readership.

1/5 A research manuscript on the web should be readable on any device, durable for decades, and accessible to assistive tech and machine readers alike. We wrote down what that requires at the level of HTML structure and have been building against it internally since February. ARCH 1.0 is now public.

When AI research agents narrow rather than broaden scientific exploration, the metadata and governance infrastructure that shapes what they search becomes a constraint on what science gets done.

When AI agents p-hack in ways reviewers can't see, named accountability at every step of the research pipeline stops being a policy preference and becomes infrastructure.

Lu et al.'s decoupling of knowledge quality from human attribution in peer-review is the structural gap that reader-side tooling has to fill, which is why The Lancet's 1-in-277 citation-fabrication figure isn't just a peer-review story, it's a science communication story.
